Iran’s president-elect, Ebrahim Raisi, said on Monday that the United States’ lifting of sanctions against the country is “central to our foreign policy.”
Raisi, 60, is currently the head of Iran’s ultra-conservative judiciary. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, is one of his mentors, and a committee led by Khamenei has disqualified many reformist presidential candidates and those allied with President Hassan Rouhani, who is considered more moderate. Because of this, millions of voters stayed home, according to Associated Press reports, and Iran recorded the lowest voter turnout ever. Raisi won the election with nearly 62 percent of the vote.
During his first press conference since the election, Raisi called himself a “human rights defender” and said he would support the revival of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, but refuse to limit Iran’s missile capabilities or support the region’s militias. “This is not negotiable,” he said. Iran’s missiles can travel 1,240 miles, and the country supports Hezbollah in Lebanon and Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Talks on the nuclear deal are now underway in Vienna between Tehran and world powers, and when asked if he will meet with President Biden, Raisi answered emphatically, “No.” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters Monday that the United States does not have diplomatic relations with Iran, and there are no plans to “meet at the leadership level, so it’s unclear that anything has really changed on that front.” Psaki added that Biden considers Khamenei to be the “decision leader”, and this was “the case before the elections, this is the case today, and may be the case in the future.”
In 2018, former President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the nuclear agreement. Today, Iran is enriching uranium to an all-time high, 60%. Weapon score is 90 percent.
