MSNBC guest Mark Thompson compared Senate Republicans blocking the Democrats’ sweeping electoral reform bill, for the People’s Act, to “apartheid.”
Thompson, host of the “Make It Plain” podcast, was present on a five-person panel on MSNBC’s “The Beat with Ari Melber” to discuss the bill that failed to get the 60 votes needed to overcome the blockage. After the vote, Thompson appeared to describe the US Senate as a “returner” from the time of slavery.
“This is really what’s left of the enslavement era,” Thompson stated. “A lot of these senators represent places that don’t have the same population while the majority of people support this legislation. This is not a democracy. This is a minority that controls this, you know, is in danger of making a controversial metaphor, I mean. A term for oligarchy and this is called apartheid. We fought against that too.”
Senate Republicans on alert for Democratic block election reform bill
Thompson heightened his complaints by insisting that “50 Democrats represent 43 million more people than the 50 Republicans” before adding that “something must be done” after this vote.
Thompson has been a frequent guest on MSNBC programming despite holding some controversial positions. He has publicly advocated for reparations in America and repeatedly advocated with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. In late 2019, Thompson tweeted in defense of Farrakhan, who is accused of anti-Semitism and homophobia for his comments and sermons.

While Thompson attacked Republican senators, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Dr. Aye, was speaking on the Senate floor. Whitehouse has been embroiled in a controversy over his membership in an elite beach club whose members are allegedly all white. Thompson did not mention the Whitehouse controversy.
