Ex-President Donald Trump kicked off his revenge tour Saturday during his first campaign-style rally since President Joe Biden took office, criticizing his usual targets: Democrats, the media, and the 2020 election — though he offered nothing new even as he hinted to the 2024 race.
“With your help, we will defeat the Radical Democrats,” he told his supporters in Wellington, Ohio. “And we have no choice.”
Fueling Republican-orchestrated panic over the critical race theory on the right, Trump stormed the military leadership, accusing them of becoming “weak and ineffective” and “waking up.”
“They have to get [critical race theory] Outside our schools, and they should ban it in our workplaces,…and ban it in federal agencies, and ban it in our military, “promising that this will be a priority” when we win a giant Republican majority next year. “
Trump called the gathering, which lasted just over an hour and a half, into the first of the 2022 session, hoping to use his influence on the party to lead Republicans toward control of Congress next year.
“Our movement is not over yet,” he told the crowd. “Actually, our battle has only just begun.
The rally was in support of Max Miller, a former Trump aide and Republican congressional candidate who hopes to oust current Representative Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio). Gonzalez was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in the wake of the Capitol riots.
Trump has accused Gonzalez of being a Washington, D.C. dignitary, claiming that he once tried to win the White House by ordering a flight with Trump on Air Force One.
“It’s a deception, it’s a fake Republican and a disgrace to your state,” he said. “It’s Liz Cheney’s candidate.”
Although the rally was ostensibly intended to support Miller, Trump stuck to his old ways and used the event to voice his own grievances and sing his own praises, repeatedly promoting the false claim that he was the real winner of the 2020 election.
“We won the election twice. It is possible that we will have to win it for the third time, it is possible.” “We did better the second time around. With all the trickery, what is the real number?”
Attending the meeting were some of Trump’s top loyalists since he left the White House: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA), Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell.
Saturday’s event, Trump’s first large-scale gathering since he left the White House and lost access to his millions of Twitter followers, was his first major blow toward those he believed wronged him since the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. He vowed to campaign against those who voted to impeach and condemn him after the rebellion attempt.
The event was also Trump’s attempt to exert more control over the Republican Party. The Daily Beast reported Friday that the twice impeached former president plans to use his new series of rallies, which include a stop in Florida and an appearance at the southern border, to fend off any potential contestants in the election.
But he seemed far from offering any new ideas or plans if 2024 kicks off.
Throughout the rally, Trump stuck to his often-used plan of “fake news” that supposedly shut down their cameras to avoid broadcasting comments that might make them look bad – but this time the event was not covered by any of Trump’s old opponents in the media. In fact, Newsmax and One America News both broadcast the rally. Fox News chose not to broadcast it.
The rally also came as Trump faces opposition from various government fronts. On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a select committee focused on the January 6 insurgency, which will likely consider the entirety of the raid led by Trump supporters — including whether Trump helped incite them. The New York Times also reported Friday that the Trump Organization, the family business, may face criminal charges in New York next week.
The longest stretch of Trump’s speech came when he strangely began reciting lyrics from The Snake, a song written by civil rights activist Oscar Brown in 1963. The lyrics tell of a “gentle” woman who takes a snake to sting her and later kills her. It’s what Trump has used to condemn the rise in immigration.
It remains to be seen whether the Republican Party, which went on to take over Trump after its defeat in 2020 and the events of January 6, risked a fatal blow in its bid to win the 2022 midterm elections.
