His agent, Jeff Schwartz, told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski Friday that Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love is withdrawing from Team USA and will not travel to Tokyo for the Olympics.
Love spent 10 days with Team USA in Las Vegas to prepare for the games but is still returning to full form after a right calf injury kept him out of a large part of the NBA season.
“I am very disappointed that I haven’t made it to Tokyo with Team USA, but you have to be at the peak of performance to compete at the Olympic level, and I’m not there yet,” Low said in a statement from Schwartz.
Team USA will now replace two players before the Olympics open on July 25. Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal was forced to withdraw from the Olympics after entering health and safety protocol earlier this week.
The United States Basketball Association also announced late Thursday night that the men’s exhibition basketball match against Australia scheduled for Friday night in Las Vegas has been canceled “out of great caution.” The USA’s final exhibition match is scheduled for Sunday against Spain, with the Japan game scheduled for Monday.
