A freak shooting outside Boston has killed three people, including a suspect, after a stolen delivery truck crashed into the side of a home in Winthrop and its driver allegedly jumped and shot two people before being shot by police and authorities. He said.

According to Massachusetts State Police, an unnamed male suspect stole a plumbing and drain company truck before plowing it into the side of a building on the corner of Charlie and Cross Street in Winthrop, located six miles northeast of downtown Boston.

Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delhane said his department received a call about a car accident at the intersection around 2:43 p.m. Saturday. Officers found the first victim, a female, on Shirley Street half a block from the scene. She was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she was later pronounced dead, according to the WCVB.

The death of the second victim, a man who Dilhante said “handled the suspect in an alley between two houses,” was announced at the scene. He said officers engaged the suspect — “armed with about two weapons” — and “ended the threat” at the intersection of Shirley Street and Veterans Road. The officer who shot the suspect was placed on administrative leave as part of standard protocol.

Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Colonel Christopher Mason said authorities know the names of the victims but do not release this information until next-of-kin are notified. WBTS-CD reports that two other people – who were inside the car that was hit during the accident – remain hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities said no one was inside the house at the time of the accident.

The incident remained under investigation by the Winthrop Police Department, Massachusetts State Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Boston Police and Revere are also assisting.

Aerial footage above the scene showed that the wrecked truck was owned by Rapid Flow Inc. , a sewer and sewage cleaning company in Revere, Massachusetts. The relationship between the gunman and the victims remains unclear.

Sources told WCVB that the female victim was a bystander and that the male victim was a retired Massachusetts State Police soldier who attempted to intervene.
