Demarius Thomas, a wide receiver at the Denver Broncos, Houston Texans and New York Jets, announced his retirement on Monday.

Thomas signs a contract with the Broncos in order to retire with the franchise where he has spent eight of the 10 NFL seasons.

Thomas will serve as the honorary captain for Denver’s inaugural home game against the Jets on September 26, according to ESPN’s Adam Shifter.

Thomas, a five-time Pro Bowler in Denver, scored 724 receptions for 9,763 yards and 63 touchdowns during his career. His greatest success came as Peyton Manning’s highest goal score, as Thomas set the franchise record for one season with 1,619 yards in 2014.

Thomas holds three of the five best auto totals for one season in franchise history and two of the best three totals in one season. Only Rod Smith has more career in getting yards in a Bronco costume.

Thomas’ career in the Hall of Fame has apparently slowed down from his last few seasons amid the Broncos’ midfield struggles following Manning’s retirement in 2016. He was traded to Houston during the 2018 season and suffered a ruptured Achilles that ended his time with the franchise after just seven games.

Eleven matches with the Jets followed in 2019, but Thomas’ influence waned. He only scored 36 receptions for 433 yards and touchdowns. Then he went without his signature during the 2020 season.
