Video shows a fire on the ocean surface in the Gulf of Mexico after a gas leak

Mexico’s state-owned oil company said on Friday it had suffered a rupture in an undersea gas pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico, causing flames to boil over the surface of the Gulf waters.

Petroleos Mexicanos said it had sent firefighting boats to pump more water over the flames.

Pemex, as the company is known, said no one was hurt in the accident at the offshore Ku-Maloob-Zaap field.

The leak occurred near dawn Friday, 150 yards from a drilling rig. The company said it had the gas leak under control after about five hours.

But the accident led to a strange sight of flames rising from under the surface of the Gulf of Mexico.

It was not clear how much environmental damage the gas leak and the ocean fireball caused.

“The terrifying footage of the Gulf of Mexico shows the world that offshore drilling is filthy and dangerous,” wrote Miyoko Sakashita, director of the oceans program at the Center for Biological Diversity.

“These horrific incidents will continue to harm the Gulf if we do not stop offshore drilling for good,” Sakashita added.
