White House deploys federal ‘surge response’ teams, Missouri seeks help amid spike in COVID-19 cases

Missouri (KY3) – The Biden administration plans to deploy “surge response” teams in some states, including Missouri, in response to the surge in COVID-19 cases in various parts of the country.

According to the Kansas City Star and multiple media reports, Missouri has asked for help from the White House, which announced the formation of new federal “surge response” teams Thursday.

Teams will be deployed to several states where the COVID-19 Delta variant poses risks to unvaccinated Americans. In a recent report, the CDC says the highest percentage of delta variants were detected in southwestern Missouri, which accounts for nearly two-thirds of all delta variants identified in the state.

The teams are designed to “increase additional testing in communities to expand detection of the virus and allow public health authorities to conduct contact tracing to help contain the outbreak,” according to an announcement from the White House.

State data shows that 44.6% of residents have received at least one shot, well below the 54.7% nationwide rate. In more than 60 Missouri counties, less than 30% of residents received the first shot, according to state data.
