Michael Jaramillo was aboard the Adventureland Raging River cruise in Altoona, Iowa, when it capsized. He died of his injuries and another happened to be in critical condition while two of the other six passengers were recently discharged from hospital.
The incident occurred on the first day of the park’s reopening since it closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. The day before it began welcoming visitors again, the Raging River cruise passed Iowa state inspection and was found to be “in good working order”.
Attorney Jay Cook, who represents Adventureland, said in a comment to CNN affiliate KCCI that the Raging River cruise has been running since the 1980s and is safe.
“Former Governor Terry Branstad made one of the inaugural runs on the Raging River in 1983,” Cook said in the statement.
But this is not the first accident that the flight has caused. In 2016, Steve Bower, 68, died after falling and hitting his head with a riding conveyor belt while working on Adventureland and helping others ride, according to the Des Moines Registry.
Currently, the park is open, but the flight will remain closed while the Iowa Department of Labor investigates the situation. Atloona PD declined to comment on the status of the event in critical condition.
“Our priority is to respect the families involved, as they are coping with the tragic loss of their child,” said Lieutenant Alissa Wilson, Altoona PD’s public information officer.
