The LA Chargers suffered a terrible loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 12, which significantly damaged the team’s chances of winning the AFC West and made the team’s road much more difficult. for the playoffs. Suddenly, the Bolts’ Week 13 game against the Cincinnati Bengals seems like a must win.
The Chargers shouldn’t have lost like they did against a team like the Broncos. Frankly, this game should have brought every fan back to earth with the expectations of the 2021 season.
It was ugly and there are players who can be blamed.
1. Justin Herbert
Charger fans don’t like to blame Justin Herbert for the losses and I understand why. He’s the definition of a franchise quarterback and does some really remarkable things that have improved this team and their schedule to win a championship.
That being said, being an elite quarterback is a double-edged sword. He’s great but the expectations are high and we can’t sit here and call him elite without blaming him for a bad game. While there were certainly other factors that led to his poor play (more on that later), we can’t just sit here and pretend he had a good game. He did not do it. The defense actually held the Broncos offense in that game and Herbert and the offense couldn’t capitalize.
Herbert completed 28 of 44 passes for 303 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. A good chunk of those yards and the second touchdown were in waste time. He didn’t play well and made some bad shots and decisions that cost the team dearly. He certainly could have gotten more help from his playmakers and the offensive line, but he could also have played better himself. We just saw him play better last week.
If Justin Herbert has a normal game with Justin Herbert, then the Chargers win that game, outright.
