Sonic Boom Across Southern California Felt Wrong by Earthquake – CBS Los Angeles

[ad_1]

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – The tremor felt in much of southern California wasn’t an earthquake – it was a sonic boom, according to the USGS.

The boom was felt around 9:20 a.m. Friday morning across a wide swath of Southern California. And while it wasn’t an earthquake, the USGS created an event page for it indicating that it was felt from Huntington Beach to Thousand Oaks along the coast, and as far from land as Lake Elinor.

Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones said the seismograms clearly showed that the ground wasn’t moving – only the air, indicating that the source was a supersonic jet over the ocean.
