Charlottesville, Virginia, followed its removal of two controversial Allied statues Saturday with the lightning-fast toppling of a third local landmark: a huge tribute to explorers Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and Sacagawea.
In an emergency meeting called 20 minutes earlier, the Charlottesville City Council voted unanimously to scrap another public artwork targeted by left-wing activists.
“I feel it should melt,” Rose Ann Abrahamson, a Sacagawea, said during the council meeting, the Daily Progress reported. “I feel it is completely offensive and should be eliminated.”

Within minutes, city staff – the same group that dismantled the equestrian statues of the elves. Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson arrived earlier Saturday – with ropes, a winch and rods to pry to pull the artwork from the plinth where it had stood on West Main Street in Charlottesville since 1919.
Local observer Molly Conger documented the operation on Twitter.
“Getting straight to work, not even taking the cherry-picker off the truck,” Conger wrote.
Lewis, the famous American adventurer sent by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the land west of the Mississippi River in 1804, was a local hero born in Albemarle County in Charlottesville.
The bronze statue cast to honor Lewis and Clark’s expedition features the two men and Sacagawea, their guide and translator from Shoshone.
In recent years, his design has been criticized for its depiction of Sacagawea, who is shown crouched behind standing white men—which activists considered insulting.

The Lewis and Clark Exploration Center in Charlottesville has offered to take the statue – but the city council has not yet decided to accept his plan.
