Nobody’s more impersonators than Wes Anderson: his witty demeanor, sonorous voiceovers, and straight, detailed compositions have become so familiar that some parts of YouTube have become familiar with Anderson pasticheurs, such as Elvis impersonators in Vegas. And with such over-familiarity, there has been a bit of a backlash – a feeling that Wes Anderson is a weary college taste.
His new movie, The French Dispatch, which Covid has long overdue, has been condemned as more of the same. I can only say… sure, yes, more fun, more buoyancy, more elegance, more cool eccentric invention, more originality. He may not be at the peak of what he can achieve but for the sheer enjoyment of moment by moment, and laughter, this is fun.
The French Dispatch is a fortune and acclaim for New Yorker, with its legendary writers’ roster, famous insistence on standards, collegiate office culture, distinctive cartoons and typographic layout, and urban sophistication aimed at a general American reading audience—in fact, I wonder why we didn’t notice The New Yorker as Anderson effect by now.
Supposedly the French Dispatch itself is a vouilion special supplement in a fictional Kansas newspaper, a guide to intellectual life in France produced in the magazine’s heyday in the late 1960s by an exhibition of illustrious American expats in the imagined French provincial town of Inoue. -Sur-Blasé – Although that name is the moment when comedy becomes very broad.
The film is a kind of short story anthology, set in a postmodern Clochemerle, based on a long-reading reportage performance of his distinguished writers, who almost all have some personal, and sexual, involvement in what is going on, quite against boring ideas about journalistic neutrality.
Owner and editor is the shy and cool Arthur Howitzer Jr., played by Bill Murray, a character clearly based on Harold Ross – but possibly also the late Robert B. Silvers of the New York Review of Books.
Tilda Swinton is art critic JKL Berensen, who tells the story of convicted murderer Moses Rosenthaler (Benicio del Toro) for whom prison guard Simon (Léa Seydoux) serves as a nude and inspirational model. Frances McDormand is Lucinda Krementz, a writer who delves into the tumultuous revolutionary student scene at Ennui-Sur-Blasé, ending in a relationship with its young leader, Che-ish Zeffirelli (Timothée Chalamet)

And Jeffrey Wright gave a remarkable performance as Roebuck Wright food writer – as James Baldwin, a gay man of color – recounts in a TV interview (a framing device not given to anyone else) his attempt to meet Special Police Chief Lieutenant Colonel Nescafer (Stephen Park), whose job is to provide food Special to Lis Flick, and Roebuck’s subsequent eyewitness account of the kidnapping of the Commissioner’s son (Matthew Amalric). And of course, the cast includes many other big names in cameos.
Mr. Howitzer can be a strict task manager – he fires a copy boy just assuming he’s telling him the print deadline is approaching – but he only has two sayings: don’t cry and try to sound like you wrote it that way on purpose. Perhaps these are Anderson’s words too – indifference and deliberation. But in reality, there’s a strange wash of gloom through the closing credits, with the magazine shut down and we’re almost seriously invited to feel sad at the end of a nonexistent print
How does the New Yorker feel about suggesting it is an anomaly from the past? I can not imagine. But there’s sure to be a lot of fun to be found in Anderson’s stunning photos, like those of his namesake, Roy Anderson. There are many examples I could choose, but I loved the pinball machine, called “Modern Physics,” the French pop star called “Tip-Top” voiced by Jarvis Coker, and the unusual “then and now” split-screen panels. How parts of Ennui-Sur-Blasé have changed since the 19th century. The French Dispatch is so funny: I take it out of the newsstand.
