Ohtani starts All-Star Game in 2021

Shuhei Otani has done unprecedented things all year, and now he’s ready to do it on the big stage, as the two-way superstar will start top spot with the MLS side in the 2021 All-Star Game Tuesday at Colorado Coursefield.

Ohtani, who leads the Majors with a score of 33, is also scheduled to participate in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby on Monday night. He made history by becoming the first player in Midsummer Classic history to be selected as an All-Star player as a center player and bowler, having been voted as the designated hitter at the start by fans and as a pitcher by players.

The Rays manager Kevin Cash, who will run the AL, told Angels manager Joe Maddon last week that Ohtani would play both ways in the game but he wasn’t sure what role he would play. But it became official on Monday, with Cash announcing that Ohtani would lead the match and take the pile at the bottom of the first game. The first designated hitter rule was changed specifically to allow the MLS to keep the DH after Ohtani’s exit.

Normally, if a DH plays on the field, the team loses the right to use the DH and the bowler must strike at that spot in the lineup. However, the All-Star game rules have been modified so that if Ohtani is taken out of the game as Karami, he can remain in the game as DH, and also be replaced in that role. The only way an AL loses in the DH is for Ohtani (or one of his substitutes in the DH) to play a position on the field other than the bowler, which is unlikely. DH has been used in every All-Star game—even if the game is played at NL Stadium as it will be this year—back to the 2011 competition in Arizona.

“I’m really excited about it,” Angels general manager Berry Minassian said. “He deserves everything that comes his way. The way he works, the way he prepares off the field, both physically and mentally, and how important this game is to him. It’s refreshing. I admire him as a person, and I wasn’t surprised by the results. his talent.”

Ohtani is also looking forward to this opportunity, as it is the 27-year-old’s first All-Star pick.

“It’s my first time so I just want to enjoy everything,” Ohtani said through translator Ebi Mizuhara. “There’s also the Home Run Derby, so I’m looking forward to getting in on everything and enjoying it all.”

Ohtani’s talent is on full display this season, as he seems to be setting new records every day and has been in a very turbulent state for the past three weeks. He set an MLS record with the 15th homer during his last 21 games Friday, and that was a Statcast shooting 463 feet on the upper deck at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. She also linked the Japanese-born sensation with the highest number of overseas-born players before the All-Star break, joining Sami Sosa in 1998.

His play Madon evokes images of Babe Ruth, who was the last player to achieve this kind of success as a two-way player nearly 100 years ago. Ohtani and Ruth in 1921 were the only players to make multiple starts on the hill while also leading the Majors in homers.

“You’ll have to go back to Mr. Roth for any comparisons,” Maddon said. “That’s just screaming what this is all about.” We are all romantic what it would be like to watch a Babe Ruth play. He made an offer, right? I mean you hear these things and it’s a larger than life idea or concept. Now we live it. So don’t underestimate what we’re seeing.”

But flaunting that kind of power isn’t unusual for Otani, who drives Majors with five eyebrows hitting 450 feet and four at an exit speed of at least 116 mph. His Apr. 12 Scott Barlow’s 119 mph remains the hardest hit ball of any left hitter since Statcast was introduced in 2015.

And on the hill, Ohtani is 4-1 with a 3.49 ERA with 87 strokes in 67 runs over 13 starts. He hit 101.1 mph with a fastball – Jacob Degrom and Gerrett Cole are the only starters to throw a stronger fastball this year – while possessing a dominant splitter that is among the game’s best.

“I know we talk about Shuhei all the time, but we don’t talk about him enough,” Alex Cope said. “It’s unbelievable.”

Soccer player Max Scherzer, who will be playing his fourth career in the midsummer classic that begins against Otani on Tuesday, was amazed by Otani’s athletic performance.

“The demands on your body to be a sharpshooter are intense, to say the least,” Scherzer said. “I can definitely talk about it. To be able to take on those workloads and then be able to hit as well, that’s totally unbelievable. It takes an incredible athlete to make that happen, and obviously that’s what it is. He’s an athlete. Great, and I feel like that’s why you see some historical stuff coming out of him and his first half and what he was able to do. A baseball must-watch any time he’s in.”

If that wasn’t enough, Ohtani also has 12 stolen bases and ranks in the 92nd percentile on the Statcast’s sprint velocity scale. He is the only player in AL or NL history to have at least 33 homers and 12 stolen bases before the All-Star break.

“Personally, I think he’s the most physically gifted baseball player we’ve ever seen,” said Red Sox All-Star Close-Up Matt Barnes. “I don’t know you’re going to see someone who can throw 101 and hit the ball 600 feet. So, I mean, he’s an outstanding player. He’s incredibly talented, and hopefully, he’ll stay healthy and have a long career.”

Ohtani will be joined in All-Star Game by Angels first baseman Jared Walsh, who has had a close-up view of Ohtani’s rackets this season, while star Mike Trout will miss the game with a strain in his right calf. But Walsh is excited to see what Otani can do this week.

Walsh said, “I don’t think people realize how special he is. Once he sees him in person, I mean the ball comes out of his racket like I’ve never seen him before.”
