Republicans point to the unrest in Cuba as evidence of the eventual failure of socialist policies, despite the tendency among left-wing Democrats to embrace them.
Thousands of Cubans took to the streets in Havana over the weekend to criticize the deteriorating conditions in the country under the communist regime, as Cuba faces its worst economic crisis in decades.
Cuban anti-government protesters wave American flags during March
“Socialism leads to pain and suffering, and Cuba is the ideal,” Senator Marsha Blackburn said in a statement. “Biden should pressure Cuba to give assurances that they will not shoot their own people. This is a big test for Biden. He must exercise American leadership and influence.”
Cuban-American Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, and Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, had particularly strong words against Cuba’s regime.
“The protests in #Cuba are not just a ‘shortage’,” Rubio wrote in a tweet on Twitter. “Socialism promises food, medicine and guaranteed income if you give up your freedom. When you fail, as always, to get you back you don’t get your freedom back.”
Cruz spoke out against the “tyranny” of the Cuban government, noting that his family had fled the country.
Social Democrats ignore Cuban protesters against communist dictatorship
“The Cuban people fought the tyranny of the communist regime for decades and took to the streets to demand freedom,” Cruz said in a statement. “This regime has brutalized and deprived generations of Cubans of liberty, forcing many including my family to flee or be killed, and in the coming days it will expand its violence to try to suppress the brave protesters in the streets.”
Meanwhile, so-called democratic socialists such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, seem to agree by not acknowledging what is happening in Cuba.

However, President Biden issued a statement endorsing the Cuban people for their “courageous assertion of fundamental and universal rights.”
“We stand with the Cuban people and their unequivocal call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and the decades of repression and economic suffering they have been subjected to by the Cuban authoritarian regime,” Biden said.
