The streaming services have already made their mark at the Emmy Awards – last year, Netflix set a record for the most nominations.
But after a year in which the pandemic has forced many Americans to increasingly switch to streaming video-on-demand for entertainment, the Television Academy is poised to reward streaming services in a big way when the nominations for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards are announced at 11:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday. The concert will take place on September 19 on CBS, and is also available on the streaming service Paramount+.
The top contenders for the Best Drama category are mostly streamers. They will likely include the fourth season of “The Crown” on Netflix; The second season of the Disney + Star Wars series “The Mandalorian”; former Best Drama winner, Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”; And freshman season on Netflix’s Bridgerton.
In the comedy category, the sports series “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV+, starring Jason Sudeikis, looks like it’s locked. She will likely be joined by a pair from the original HBO Max series: “The Flight Attendant” and “Hacks.” Kaley Cuoco from The Flight Attendant and Jan Smart from Hacks will likely face best actress in a comedy series. The cable and broadcast networks will likely only have one or two candidates in the Best Comedy category, which would be an all-time low.
Although the streaming services have amassed a lot of nominations over the past nine years, big gains have been out of reach.
How many times has Streamer won Best Drama? That would be one, and it was accomplished four years ago when “The Handmaid’s Tale” took the crown. How many winners for best comedy? only two. And for the best limited series, which arguably turned into the most exciting Emmys category? zero.
And Netflix — despite investing billions in content over the past few years, and spending a lot of money on Emmy campaigns — has never won an award in Drama, Comedy, or Best Limited Series, a dry period that may end this year.
The Crown should dominate the acting categories.
“The Crown” is widely seen in the entertainment industry as the gold standard in television thanks to its lush production values and great cast.
But it’s 0 against 3 in best drama sprint, and most of the Emmy Awards were in smaller categories like production and fashion design.
“The Crown” is this year’s favorite to finally win Best Drama for Season 4 of the show, and several of its cast – Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, Emma Corinne as Princess Diana, Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher. Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip – the nominations are expected. This will be their last chance to win an Emmy for their roles; Next season of “The Crown” will feature a new cast.
With Cedric the Entertainer hosting, the Emmys hope to stop ratings free fall.
Cedric the Entertainer, star of the CBS comedy, “The Neighborhood,” will be the host of this year.
Although the show will return to the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, CBS said the show will have a “limited audience” of candidates and their guests.
CBS hopes the Emmy Award will reverse the troubling trend of award shows, which have seen record low rates over the past year. And while the mostly virtual Emmys were widely hailed last year, the score for the ratings was the same: only 6.1 million people watched, which is a low number.
Tuesday’s nomination announcement will be virtual, and will be hosted by a pair of Emmy Award-winning actors: Ron Cephas Jones and his daughter, Jasmine Cephas Jones.
