Apple on Tuesday announced a battery pack that slots into the back of the iPhone 12 to provide extra battery life. It will help people extend the battery life of their iPhone if it is about to die.

The MagSafe Battery Pack costs $99 and is available in white. It’s available for pre-order now and will begin shipping next week.

Snapped onto the back of the iPhone, it can charge the phone at 5W — about the same as an old square iPhone wall charger, and slower than the 15W you get from a regular MagSafe charger. When connected to an iPhone, users can plug a cable into the Lightning port to charge the battery and the device at higher speeds.

Like other Apple accessories, it integrates closely with the iPhone operating system to bring out additional battery life in iOS.

This week’s product release is the latest in a line of accessories that use Apple’s MagSafe system, which it introduced last fall with its new iPhones. In surveys, extra battery life is consistently considered one of the most important features consumers want from their smartphone.

Apple has released battery extender cases in the past, but without MagSafe, Apple’s smart battery cases needed to be physically plugged into an iPhone port to charge them and give the battery extra life.

Apple hasn’t released official estimates for battery life or charging capacity, but one of the product images says the MagSafe battery has a 1,460mAh battery, or just under half of the iPhone 12’s 3110mAh battery.
