Earthquake shakes south-central Texas near Smiley

SMILE, Texas (KTRK) – Another earthquake shook parts of south central Texas Tuesday night.

A 2.8-magnitude earthquake was detected around 7:30 p.m. south of Smiley in Gonzales County.

There have been no reports of damage from this event, which is estimated to have originated approximately 5 miles below the Earth’s surface.

This is the fourth earthquake in Texas in the past 24 hours. Earlier today, seismic events were reported near Menton in Loving County and in the Midland region. Both earthquakes recorded 2.6 on the Richter scale.

Residents in Smiley, Texas, are no strangers to earthquakes, although the earthquakes were not significant.

A 3.3-magnitude earthquake hit the same area in April.

Smiley is located approximately 160 miles west of Houston.
