Karl Rove slams Texas Democrats who fled to Washington over GOP voting procedures

Karl Rove, the former White House deputy chief of staff under President George W. Bush, joined Neil Cavuto on Your World Wednesday for a discussion about Democrats’ true intentions in leading the electoral process in Texas.

Karl Rove: There are two big issues that dominate this debate in Texas. They have something to do with practices that were used last year in Harris County, home to Houston, Texas. It involves two things: Harris County on its own decided it would hold a 24-hour vote, and it would allow people to vote for 24 consecutive hours, which is not allowed under state law. They had to come up with a strange explanation, and they had one day of it. This law that has been proposed in Texas will make it clear that it is not allowed because it is expensive. You have to appoint election administrators, and you have to appoint volunteer election judges. Parties have to nominate people. It will be difficult for many provinces to do so. Only one county out of 254 did so.

The other is driving-through voting. Texas has a very explicit law that states that the only people who can use drive-by voting are people who are physically unable to reach the polls without assistance. She decided to boycott Harris on her own [that] It would set up eight locations, mostly in county Democrats, and allow people to vote by car. Now, why don’t we love it? Because who in the car checks during voting? And those are the two big issues here.

…Now, why do we have Democrats saying this is necessary? Because they say if we don’t have these laws, it’s voter suppression. Now, the problem is that Harris County is the only county in Texas to have these 24 hour and by car votes. The turnout in Harris County is below the statewide average. If this is so important for turnout, why is Harris County below the statewide average? In fact, there are 130 counties that had neither the 24 hour vote nor the higher turnout car vote. One of them, interestingly, was the deputy. [Michelle] Beckley neighborhood. Denton County was more popular than Harris County without these extra expensive and unnecessary programs. A significant number of South Texas was included in 91 counties, with Hispanic counties in South Texas and South Central Texas seeing a greater improvement in turnout between 2016 and 2020 than Harris County.

Look, this is all about politics. The Democrats were losing, so they decided they were going to Washington and claiming it was all about racism and oppression. And that’s not what it’s about at all. In fact, this bill increases the number of hours people are allowed to vote during the early voting period in Texas and requires more counties to vote on the weekend. We move from a requirement that counties with 100,000 residents squander early voting within 13 days of early voting to each county with more than 55,000 voters. So, look, this is all about national politics and trying to break the rules in Texas with basically no good reason at all. And the kind of language that these people use, Representative Beckley and others, voter suppression, Jim Crow and racism, is absurd.
