Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of Denmark broke her silence on Thursday over the anti-communist and pro-freedom protests that erupted in Cuba by partially blaming the suffering of “ordinary people” on the historic legacy of the United States’ 60s. The ban was imposed a year ago.
“We see Cubans rising up and protesting for their rights in an unprecedented way. We stand in solidarity with them and condemn the anti-democratic measures led by President Diaz-Canel,” the alleged Social Democrat said in a statement.
She described the communist government’s suppression of media, speech and protest as “gross violations of civil rights.”
But then she touched on the “contribution” of the United States to what turned out to be the worst crisis in Cuba in decades.
“We should also mention the contribution of the United States to Cuban suffering: the embargo imposed 60 years ago,” she said.

Her comments came after Black Lives Matter released a statement that also blamed the US embargo for destabilizing the country and took credit for the Cuban government for historically granting “black revolutionaries” asylum.
The BLM called on the United States to lift the sanctions, which are “a cruel and inhuman policy, laid with the express intention of destabilizing the country and undermining the right of Cubans to choose their own government, which is at the heart of the current crisis in Cuba.”
Like Ocasio-Cortez, fellow Democrats have echoed talking points of the Cuban communist government, blaming the United States, not the communist government, for its plight. Many have called on President Joe Biden to end the decades-old embargo.

The embargo was imposed by the United States after Fidel Castro overthrew the US-backed Batista regime in 1959. The embargo has since been renewed by presidential administrations aimed at isolating Cuba economically and diplomatically.

Former President Barack Obama attempted to normalize relations with Cuba during his second term. These policies were rolled back under President Donald Trump, who imposed new sanctions.
Last month, the United States voted against a United Nations resolution overwhelmingly condemning the 29th US economic embargo on Cuba.
Ocasio-Cortez called the ban “ridiculously cruel,” adding that “like so many other U.S. policies targeting Latin America, cruelty is the goal.”

“I expressly reject the Biden administration’s defense of the ban,” she wrote. “It is never acceptable for us to use cruelty as a pressure point against people every day.”
