HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – The new COVID-19 case numbers in Pennsylvania mirror those found nationally.

The state has reported nearly 1,500 cases of the novel coronavirus over the past seven days. That’s a huge jump from the 907 that was reported the previous week. It’s the first time new cases have trended higher in Pennsylvania since early spring, but the daily numbers are still a fraction of what they were during the height of winter.

The state health department reported an additional 415 positive cases of COVID-19 Friday, bringing the statewide total to 1,215,767.

Average daily hospitalizations have continued to fall slightly over the past 14 days, but experts warn that will change if new cases continue to rise. 247 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19. Of that number, 50 are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19, according to the state health department.

The statewide positive rate for the week of July 2 – July 8 was 1.2%.

The state health department reported four more deaths on Friday, bringing the state’s death toll to 27,786.

According to the CDC, as of Thursday, Pennsylvania ranked fifth among all 50 states in terms of total vaccine doses taken. 61.5% of Pennsylvania residents age 18 or older have been fully vaccinated.

5.5 million people were fully vaccinated, with a seven-day moving average of more than 12,100 people per day receiving vaccinations.

People who have not been vaccinated or have been partially vaccinated are still encouraged to wear a mask when in public.
