American women start collecting third gold in a row in water polo by beating Japan

The US women’s water polo team, defending Olympic champions from both London and Rio, easily defeated Japan, 25-4, in the first of four Olympic games round.

Maggie Stevens and Stefania Harralapides led all American scorers with five goals each as nine Americans contributed goals. Stevens raised her Olympic goals total to 42. Now she needs just six goals to surpass Italy’s Tania Di Mario as the all-time top scorer in women’s water polo at the Olympics.

Japan, who competed in their first Olympics, got off to an encouraging start in the first quarter, tying with the United States 3-3. From that point onwards, the highest-ranked team in the world completely dominated.

The United States scored 13 goals without a response to end the first half. Goalkeeper Ashley Johnson maintained a perfect second quarter, saving every Japanese shot past her net. She finished the match with a total of 15 saves in 19 attempts.
