According to Ibomcha, armed militants attacked their village at dawn from multiple directions. Because of her age, her mother was unable to escape and insisted that the rest of the family run to safety. On their return, they tragically discovered his charred body, locked inside the house that had been set on fire by the assailants.
As a former vice president of the Manipur Peoples Party, Ibomcha is determined in his pursuit of justice for the gruesome death of his mother and appealed to the Prime Minister for attention to this serious matter. Expressing concern for the safety and security of people in their own land, he asked, “What will our PM say about my mother who was burnt alive in her home?”
During the attack, Ibomcha’s nephew attempted to save his grandmother but was shot dead in the process and is currently undergoing treatment at RIMS hospital in Imphal. In response, state forces engaged the militants, resulting in the death of a “miscreant” in Serou Bazar.
Ibomcha’s late father, Sorkhaibam Churachan Meitei, had an impressive history of contributions to India’s freedom struggle. As a tribute to his dedication and courage, he was honored with the prestigious Tamra Patra for his significant role in the “Walang Buwis” movement in Sylhet from 1931 to 1932 and his important participation in the Quit India movement in 1942.
Amidst these tragic events, Ibomcha raised important questions about the protection of indigenous people in Manipur and called for adequate security forces to ensure the safety of the Meitei community in their own land.
