Olympics-Hockey-Netherlands, Britain breeze to win women’s hockey in Tokyo

TOKYO (Reuters) The Netherlands secured an easy victory over South Africa in hot, swollen conditions at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday, while Britain defeated India.

The Dutch women’s team led the goal at half time after veteran striker Frederique Matla scored after Lidewij Welten’s left from the left.

After setting up that platform, the Dutch party went through the second half and scored four more goals with a nice 5-0 win. Formal Dutch women remain undefeated in Tokyo after scoring a total of 14 goals and letting go of just one tournament in three matches to date.

There are always areas in every match where we can develop, said Eva de Goede, who played her fourth Olympics in Tokyo.

We got a lot of goals, but if you consider the number of opportunities we created, there really aren’t that many penalty angles that can also be handled better.

As the temperature rose as the game progressed, officials had extended the break between the third and fourth quarters to four minutes from the usual two to give both sides plenty of room to cool down.

In the second match of the women’s hockey tournament, the Rio Gold Medalists 2016 won India 4-1.

After an early goal by game developer Hannah Martin, the Indian team pulled their opponent to the level soon after he was left behind in the 19th minute when Martin bagged the second.

The UK team eventually ran out of nice winners, scoring two more in the second half.
