The Alta Laguna Park tennis court will be converted into a pickle

As picket players have asked for recognition of the growth of the sport in the community, the city of Laguna Beach is increasing the number of fields where paddling can be practiced.

Laguna Beach City Council unanimously approved a plan to convert one of Alta Laguna Park’s six tennis courts into permanent pickle courts. There could be two or three pickle courts on the re-set tennis court, depending on the configuration.

It is in response to the huge number of requests we have received from local residents looking for more pickle capacity in the city as it is a very fast growing sport and involves a lot of residents, Deputy Director Michael Litschi said he would present the matter at a Council meeting on Tuesdays.

The Park in Lieu Fund will set aside $ 17,000 to cover the cost of changing the courts in Alta Laguna.

The recommendation to increase pickle capacity at Laguna Beach came with a vote by the city’s recreation committee on July 12th.

Pickleball games are currently allowed at Lang Park from 8 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Alta Laguna Park’s second tennis court also has two temporary pickle courts with opening hours equivalent to the times during which sports are allowed at Lang Park.

About 10 residents spoke at the meeting, most of whom were in favor of expanding pickle capacity.

One thing I want to emphasize is that tennis players have access to the Pool [Laguna Park] courts from 7.30 to 22.00, if it returns, then really it is from 7.30 to 22.00 every day of the week, recreation committee member Roger Kempler said. Some speakers suggested that due to the simultaneous playing of pickle ball and tennis, permanent pickle pitches should be placed at the head so that the shared pitch is adjacent.

The direction the courts face in relation to the sun was another concern, while others were most in favor of pickle fields that would fit into a space that could be converted in practice.

The consent calendar item was appealed to the discussion by Mayor Pro Tem Sue Kempf, who revealed that he had pulled meat by playing pickles earlier in the day.
