SUPPLIERS NOTE: This is the Fifth of Auburn’s seven-part series of 2021 football.
This season marks the beginning of a new era Auburns line of defense. Longtime coach Rodney Garner is away after eight seasons; replaced Nick Eason. First Year Defense Coordinator Derek Mason is moving on defense from a 4-2-5 system to a 3-4 lead, meaning new roles for the remaining players.
Here’s what we know and don’t know about Auburns’ line of defense:

What we know
We know Auburn needs his defense to create more pressure than last season. Some of them come from Edge players or outside players in the Masons system, but the line of defense also needs to do more.

Colby Wooden is a great starting point as he has collected four sacks and led the team with nine losses last year. He had a pressure of 9.3% last season CFB movie room, who finished third in defense behind Derick Hall (who now plays outside the lineup) and Big Kat Bryant (transferred to UCF).
The next closest player behind Woodenwas Walker is 3.2%. He recorded one sack last season. He is one of the players Auburn will ask for more this season.
The good news for Tigers, however, is that last year was the first round for many returnees Wooden, Walker, Butler, Burks and Wright. Gaining this experience and a full offseason should only help.
Because there is potential. Walker was Auburns ’second-highest named player in 2020. Butler recorded just two losses and one kick in restricted action last season, but he was one of the most explosive junior school lines of defense a year ago when he recorded 22 losses and 11 kicks at Independence (Kansas) Community College.
New entrants can also help Montgomery’s native Marcus Harris, a move from Kansas, led Jayhawks by seven losses last season.

What we don’t know
We don’t know exactly how high the Woodens ceiling is. But it certainly looked like last season he had Auburns next star on the defensive line.
The 6-foot-4,280-pound redshirt freshman produced 42 of his tackles, 9 losses, four sacks, six quarterback rushes and a pass break when they had lost nearly the entire season of 2019 to the mono. So last year was just the beginning.
The Masonic system could also suit him ideally. Wooden split his time last season between the end and the tackle, and the 3-4 end is somehow the perfect hybrid of the two.
I just want to show my versatility, Wooden said. What I need to work on is just the basics like using my hands better and getting loose and staying low. I feel like staying low is a big deal because I got up last year. I just have to stay a little lower and keep working.
Resigning candidate
Burks.With Wright sidelined indefinitely after tearing up the ACL during spring rehearsals and Jay Hardy being gone, Burks has tended to be one of the team’s best options, if not a beginner. The former junior college player started slowly due to injury last season, but Wooden said the parent is stronger and more physical and was exceptional during the spring.

Auburn has always had a great tradition. I played Takeo Spikes in high school. I coached Carl Lawson in Cincinnati for the last couple of years, so I got to know him. I came here last year and met Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson. I coached Angelo Blackson, I put him on when I was with the Tennessee Titans. Gabe Wright, I have also crossed paths with him. So it’s a tradition, especially on the line of defense here in Auburn, and it’s going to be that way. Nick Eason
