OXNARD, CA.-After consecutive days of throwing, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has not experienced being left under the pressure of a right shoulder and has eyes to return to practice full-time next week and possibly to play Aug. 21 against Houston Texans.
“Obviously, if everything progresses to the former model, I’m optimistic about it,” Prescott said. “… Keep doing the things I have to do; however, I’m very careful with it. Make sure I’m ready to open the season first and foremost.”
Prescott went through a pre-practice quarterback school and, without defense on the field, threw routes to running pieces, tight ends and wide receivers. Although he said the intensity of Wednesday’s session was more than on Tuesday, he was not allowed to test his hand with completely more challenging and deeper throws.
“I’m going to move on to these pretty quickly, I think,” Prescott said. “Right now, it’s just that I think I’m in teamwork and tearing up my passport, not worrying about it. I’m just trying to make sure I’m healthy enough to do it when the time comes, because when I get back to competition in regulations or on the team, I’m not going think in my hand no matter what day or stage it is. So it’s about progressing to that right time. ”
Prescott has a magnetic resonance imaging when the Cowboys return to Texas after Friday’s Arizona game. A precaution is taken to see how the healing process progresses on his shoulder.
Prescott was shut down for throwing for two weeks after withdrawing from practice on July 28 with a latissimus strain. He made a light throw over the weekend and has stepped up his work at the Cowboys break camp in Oxnard, California.
He said he doesn’t feel after losing six exercises, but admits watching has made it harder after he had lost so much time last season because the dislocation and fracture of his right ankle were last October.
“I’m a go-go-go guy. I always want to be involved and get better,” he said. “I think the more repetitions, the better. And the better for me. But obviously something like that, you can’t stress it too fast. I sit and I’m away all the time when I was away last year, so I think about it and it can keep me in custody. It’s a risk and a reward at this point, and I need to know where I’m playing, and it’s ready for this season. ”
The Cowboys negotiated with the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees about Prescott’s injury, as it is mostly considered a “baseball injury.” Prescott doesn’t think he has to limit practice time during the regular season.
“Talking to other doctors, to people who have dealt with injuries like this, if you stay that way and get over it, once you’ve healed for the most part, you’re ready to go,” he said. “It’s not something you think or worry about. Like I said, it’s just doing it and doing it right, that I don’t have a setback, and then I’m worried about it and it should be gentle all year long and it should be a playing field.”
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy and vice president Stephen Jones said the Cowboys had to protect Prescott from himself through a conservative rehabilitation approach.
“It’s natural when you close a quarterback completely by throwing, then there’s the process of building him back,” McCarthy said. “We’re continuing to go through this program today. So he’s throwing a little more today than he did yesterday.”
When it comes to playing against Texas, one factor is who else is playing offensively. The Cowboys don’t put Prescott on the field without regular players like Tyron Smith, Zack Martin and La’el Collins protecting him. Jones isn’t worried that Prescott will move to the Tampa Bay game without a pre-trial, even though he hasn’t played the game in 11 months.
“I know people are worried about it, but I think it’s overrated,” Jones said. “I just think these guys, I mean, Dak Prescott knows how to play football, and whether he plays a series or two in Houston doesn’t affect how he’s going to play the opening game against Tampa.”
