Australian cricket coach Justin Langers ’unstable approach is ruining the team

Apparently Glenn Maxwell had once fallen into a simple prey because Langer thought he had been disturbed by a conversation with TV commentators.

It became an issue at a team meeting leading up to the series. When I pointed out that players had been mixed up during his several championships as the coach of the Perth Scorchers at Big Bash, he replied: I don’t give rats domestic cricket.

In desperation, I asked players who didn’t want to use a microphone. Most raise their hands. Who did? Maxwell is the only player to raise his hand. Langer shook his head.

Fearing the effects of the broadcast contract, I arranged a meeting with Cricket Australias mission staff, Fox and Langer. The solution was found on the eve of the first match, and players spoke to the spider camera as it fell down during breaks.

Where did all the fuss come from? And why so close to the start of the season?

An hour before the first match, as players warmed up Adelaide Oval and Mark Howard dodged fast bowlers who did interviews before the match for Fox, there was noise in my left ear.

I looked around in amazement. There was Langer, a steel-eyed and square chin. I quickly looked to see if the Fox graph or cable blocked the warm-up drill, but I didn’t see anything unpleasant.

What is that? Langer shouted again, pointing over his shoulder. We have to play these shit in an hour!

The video screen next to the Adelaide Oval scoreboard featured Sri Lankan captain Lasith Malinga, bowlers and her trademark, swinging yorkers.

I looked around the country again quickly, but no one paid attention to the screen. They were too busy watching cricket balls fly during the warm-ups. I went looking for someone who was responsible for the output of the screen, but I couldn’t help but wonder if there would be more important things than going to the first match of the summer.

Like many of these small events, Langers blows up latest Cricket Australian digital journalist during recent Bangladesh tour is nothing separate but promotes a pattern of irregular behavior.

Team manager Gavin Dovey clearly condemned the digital reporter for the team because cricket.com.au, which is run by Cricket Australia but operates as an international cricket news site, had posted a video of Bangladesh celebrating its series victory over Australia. Dovey later admitted that he could have handled things better.

When Langer found out, he marched to the reporter and urged him to be very careful, or words for that. It was school yard issues that could have become an HR issue in another setting. At least it was completely unnecessary and again far from an event worth worrying about when your team is at a 3-0 loss with two matches.

I’ve known Justin Langer most of his cricket life. As a cricket writer, I presented his debut when he brave half a century against the West Indies in early 1993 and wore the helmet of fast bowler Ian Bishop atop the dark Adelaide sky.

I admire the way he fought for eight years to get himself halfway through the most successful opening partnership in Australian history with Matthew Hayden.

And his status as a statesman was crucial to restoring confidence in the Australian public when he was appointed coach to pick up the pieces after the South African Sandpapergate smelter three years ago.

But players are tired of the volatile, high-stress environment in which he lives as a coach, and his popular, cliché-motivating homyls.

As one player said Herald and Age: It empties and affects everything.
