Naomi Osaka admitted she was “hesitant” about her shock loss in Cincinnati

Naomi Osaka left extra match habits ahead of the US Open when she fell to Swiss wildcard Jil Teichmann in the third round of the Cincinnati Western & Southern Open.

Osaka seemed to be cruising to victory as he took the opening round, but a series of unforced errors began to affect his game and offered Teichmann a chance to equalize.

World No. 2 succeeded in an early break in the decisive installment, but it was soon canceled and key moments came during the fourth game as Osaka left reciprocal overhead and gave a shout of frustration.

He would have two more breaks in his service, and his unforced number of errors would rise to over 40 as World No. 76 Teichmann secured the biggest win of his career 3-6 6-3 6-3.

Osaka later admitted that the lack of competition had begun to show, and the loss only came in his fifth match after he left the French Open at the end of May, citing concerns about his mental health.

“I thought I felt a little hesitant, and I don’t normally feel it.” said Osaka, who had broken up during interrogations at a press conference in Cincinnati earlier this week.

“Of course, I put myself in this situation by deciding not to play in so many tournaments, so yes, I just felt comfortable and also more confident because I feel like I sometimes doubted myself.

“I also thought my performance in Tokyo was on my mind for a while too because I felt like I was too aggressive there.

“I felt like I learned a lot from this match today, and if I take anything out of this, I tried my best throughout the match so I could sleep at night.”
