Tennis masters fall into comets

After a week of rainfall, close calls, and a JV match at the Triad, the Hillsboro girls ’tennis team finally got a full match on Tuesday, Aug. 31. season.

Visiting Comets had been working in the offseason, and that was evident when they lost Hillsboron 9-0, leaving only 10 points in the match.

In singles, Ruthie Mathews took a couple of points away from Ellie Schaufelberger in number three before losing 6-1, 6-1, while Melissa Bell made two against Cora Miller in sixth, but fell 6-2, 6 -0. Macy Shipman also scored in the doubles, but Evie Johnson picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Topper’s senior.

Doubling proved equally difficult for HHS. Shipman and Mathews were closest to victory, taking Johnson and Mathias second in the match 10-3. The other two matches ended 10-1, with Ridens and Schaufelberger defeating Lucykow and Matson; and 10-0, Miller and Palen beat Bell and Hoover.

On Wednesday, after a trip to the Highland, Hillsboro will play at home again on September 2 against the East Alton-Wood River at 4:30 p.m.
