Michigan State Spartans Football: 3 takeaways from Northwestern

The Michigan State Spartans opened the 2021 season by winning 38-21 Northwest Wildcats on the road in Evanston. Mel Tucker and the company set the tone in the early stages of victory, with runner-up Kenneth Walker III taking his first position in the green and white 75 yards from the house after the first game.

We learned a lot from this year’s team on Friday night, and we learned a lot more as the season progressed, but let’s take a moment to look at some of the excerpts from the season’s opening win.

1. Kenneth Walker III is advertised

The biggest pick-up from Friday’s win is the transfer -Kenneth Walker III very good for the whole football thing. As mentioned, Walker took the opening carriage 75 yards into the house, demonstrating his speed and athleticism. He finished 264 yards and with four touches, marking the performance of Spartan’s best single game after LeVeon Bell scored 266 yards against Minnesota in 2012.

And if you forgot, the Spartans went all season 2020 without an offensive attack.

While Walkers ’speed and athleticism helped him with his few long runs, it would be wrong not to rely on some to block his line of attack. Arkansas state transfer attack game Jarrett Horst came with a switch in some key blocks outside. Horst recently received praise from Tucker on his radio show for his physicality in the wells, and that was evident on Friday. As Tucker said, Horst plays the whistling echo, which was a big help in Friday night’s running game.

Connor Heyward, who seems to be playing mostly tight / H-back this season, also raised some key blocks in the running game, especially Walkers ’second touch to the game, where he placed a key block for a future line player, giving Walker the space he needed to score a goal.

Finally, the established running game will really help the Spartans move forward this year, apparently, especially when MSU gets into the later season. While Walker may not be able to lift 250 yards per game forward, getting this threat is a huge offense to want to make a big leap from where it was in 2020.

2. Deep players are ready to make an impact.

Mel Tucker has made it clear in the state of Michigan from day one that if a player is willing to play, he will be able to play. He made it clear on Friday and offered significant minutes to many depth players. Many of them also looked sharp.

Darius Snow saw a lot of time on the field with defense on Friday, and there are also a few big plays to be shown. Snow read a few games perfectly and made impressive open-air races, including a defeat in the fight to enter the screen in the third quarter. Another slight surprise was redshirt freshman Cal Haladay, who drew the start for the line player, played a lot of clicks and played pretty well overall.

The Spartans also spin a lot of lines of defense throughout the game, which is a promising sight. If the Spartans have so much depth in the defensive line that it is immediately ready to play, the defense can be a really strong and fresh unit this season for a team that needs to take a big step forward from last season. The elite defense of Spartan in recent years has been built from trenches. Hopefully it will be back this season.

3. The Spartans have a quarterback.

Spartan fans finally found out who was No. 1 quarterback on Friday. Payton Thorne was unveiled as a beginner just before the start of the match, and he looked solid throughout the game. Thorne looked calm under pressure, gave great throws (though some played with incredible catches on his wide receivers) and most importantly, didn’t turn the ball around.

One of the biggest problems for Spartans in recent seasons has been finding a guy in the middle. They had a hard time finding a quarterback who could deliver consistently, and it really stopped the team. Last year, Thorne showed glimpses of the defender he may be, and it should come as no surprise that he started on Friday. He played a solid, albeit spectacular, game against the Wildcats and did what his team needed to win.

The only area Thorne was a little off was a deep ball, but it looked like the rust was shaking off, and while he doesn’t have the strongest arm, it may not be a huge concern going forward. I think hell is calling it. He was pretty close to hitting his receivers into a deep ball, but, oh boy, when he does, it becomes a great threat with which the Spartan attack must deal.

The Spartans are in a good place right now, but that doesn’t mean work shouldn’t be done. If you think about it, if the Wildcats hit both of their missed field goals, the end result is 38-27 and looks much closer to the game. However, the win is a win, and the Spartans are well positioned on the Youngstown state horizon for a home game next week.
