Former Pakistani opener Saeed Anwar was one of the few international cricketers in the race who never had to use brute force to give his side an electrifying start. Rather, he relied on his stylish batting game to collect fast-paced running games against any bowler. Many cricket experts of his time say that Anwar knew perfectly the timing of his shots and was able to destroy all the bowlers when he was given width outside the stump. Anwar didn’t use his legs much when driving through the side, and later in his career it became a problem as he often got caught in the fourth slip.
Initially in his career, Anwar became a white ball player, but later he also made his name in red ball cricket. During its heyday, Anwar was a reliable opener, especially when Pakistan faced India.
Some of the biggest blows of Anwars ’career were against Pakistani arch-rival India. He made a total of 2002 races against India in 50 matches of four hundred and eight fifty. Anwars ’highest score in the 194 ODI run also came against India. However, Anwar was not as successful against India when it comes to the test, as he has only made one hundred of the three games he has played against his neighbors in the longest form of the game.
Today, as Saeed Anwar celebrates its 53rd anniversary; here we look at his centuries against India:
188 runs 258 balls, place: Kolkata (Asian Test Championship)
Anwars only Test century against India came in 1999 during the Asian Test Championship in Kolkata. Southpaw made an unbeaten 188 run with 258 balls in 23 fours and one six Pakistani second innings when they won the match in 46 runs. What makes this punch even more memorable is that he made a significant comeback in the second inning after being disqualified from the 12-ball duck during the first innings of the match.
194 runs 146 balls in Chennai (Pepsi Independence Cup)
Anwar played one of the best innings of his ODI career on May 21, 1997 against India during the Pepsi Independence Cup. He crushed Indian bowlers all over Chennai Park as he made blisters on 194 running 146 balls. It was also the highest ODI score at the time and held this record since 2010. Pakistan, ridden in its century, won the match against India in 35 runs.
104 runs 128 balls, place: Sharjah (Akai-Singer Champions Trophy)
Southpaw also played a crucial role in the Pakistan’s four-stage victory over India in the fourth match of the Akai-Singer Champions Award. Chasing 240 runs to win, Anwar gave Pakistan a flying start when he made 104 runs with 128 balls and guided himself alone to a nice win for Men in Green.
140 runs 132 balls, place: Dhaka (Silver Jubilee Independence Cup)
In the second India-Pakistan match in Dhaka in 1998, fans saw Anwar’s second championship. Hitting first, Pakistan made 314 runs from a five-wave loss, thanks to some of Anwar’s confusing punches. He made 140 runs in the match with just 132 balls. However, his efforts went in vain when Sourav Ganguly made 124 runs and inspired Men in Blue to win three wins.
101 runs 126 balls, place: Centurion (ICC World Cup)
Anwar made 101 runs with 126 balls in the 36th match of the ICC World Cup. However, it was not enough to break the Pakistani World Cup curse against India when the green shirts lost another World Cup game against India and this time six goals. The Anwars 101 running shot was full of seven of the four.
