Sri Lanka nominated a 15-player team for next month’s Twenty20 World Cup, but said it was unsure whether it would play against Afghanistan over the Taliban’s announced ban on women’s sports.

Sri Lankan cricket retained Dasun as Shanaka captain and Dhananjaya de Silva as deputy at the T20 World Cup, which will be held from October 17 to November 14 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

“We have now finished the team, but we have not yet made a decision on Afghanistan,” Mohan de Silva, secretary of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board, told AFP.

“We are aware of reports that some (teams) may boycott Afghanistan’s play on the Taliban status of women, but we have not yet made a decision on that,” de Silva said.

Australian test captain Tim Paine said on Friday he believed teams could withdraw from the Twenty20 tournament or boycott matches against Afghanistan unless the Taliban regime changed its stance on women’s sports.

According to the regulations of the International Cricket Council, the countries in the tests must also have an active women’s team.

Australia said on Wednesday it would cancel the virginal test against Afghanistan in Hobart in November unless the Taliban retreat.

Kabul’s new Taliban regime has made it clear that while they will allow the national men’s cricket team to continue their matches abroad, they will not allow women to participate in the sport.
