When Alabama missed out on SEC SEC enemy Georgia 13-0 in the middle of the 2018 College Football Playoff, Alabama coach Nick Saban sent back-up backup then Tua Tagovailo to try to ignite Crimson Tide’s attack in the second half. Tagovailo had been supported by beginner Jalen Hurts throughout the season. He shared 35:53 and shared 470 yards, eight goals and one abduction in the regular season. So he had played some and worked very well, typically in the second half of the blast victories, but this was the second half of the national championship.
Given the circumstances, Tagovailo was exactly what the doctor prescribed. He passed 14 and 24 players with 166 yards, three touches and one abduction, including DeVonta Smith’s winning streak overtime, giving Crimson Tide the second national championship.

For the second game in a row, Tagovailoa made 73.3 percent of his passes when he threw his career to the highest 387 yards and four touches at the time, while he rushed for new points and gave him five games. Playing in his first Iron Bowl, Tagovailo was exceptional with 25/32 passes (78.1 percent) at 324 yards and five touches without spaces, and he also rushed into touch and gave him six games. It ruled the Alabama archives.

As the quarterback to start in Tagovailo’s first and only College Football Playoff win, the second-year quarterback brought the dominant first half as Crimson Tide jumped to 28-0 instead of Oklahoma No. 4 in the first 17 minutes of the game. As Oklahoma made them more valuable in the second half, Tagovailo responded with two additional touches, one to DeVonta Smith and the other to Jerry Jeudy, giving Tagovailo 318 yards and four goals for the match. His 88.9 percent performance (24-27) was the third best of his career, just after his eight-eight performances against Louisiana in 2018 and his 11-12 effort against Tennessee in 2019.
