The University of Michigan has won the nine Division I men’s hockey championship.
Brian Nicholas would like to be a part of it on the 10th or better.
Scarsdale junior, who won the Swiss Five Nations Tournament last month, is committed to playing college hockey for the Wolverines.
It is scheduled to begin in 2024 after his last two years of high school and full year after playing for the Juniors.
Michigan was among Nicholas ’five seriously considered colleges. Others were Penn State, Boston University, Northeast and Harvard. His last official visit was in Michigan from 8 to 9.
“As soon as I stepped on campus, it felt right,” Nicholas said. “The campus and the history of the national championships, as well as the players who (continued) to the NHL, made the decision for me.”
The upcoming high school season is the last for local fans watching Nicholas play in the Scarsdale blouse.
In May, the Sioux City Iowa Musketeers from America’s best junior league, the USHL, made Nicholas the first and eighth draft of the league in 2021.
In addition to Scarsdale, Nicholas plays for the Triple-A Long Island Gulls team at Ice Works Ice Rink in Syosset, Long Island. He has already played 15 matches this season at Gulls and will continue to play until the end of their season in May.
But he also plays in Scarsdale and plans to spend his school holidays in Sioux City before moving to Sioux City full-time next year. He will complete his high school online online next year through a program set up by the University of Nebraska before he begins the preschool intermediate year to play again in Sioux City.
The impending closure of his high school career puts some pressure on the family on the 16-year-old assailant, the youngest of five children, and they have all continued collegiate athletics. On the ice, Nicholas chases three of them, brothers James (Scarsdale class 2015) and Stephenia (class 2016) and sister Erin (class 2017), all of whom won the Section 1 hockey championship with Scarsdale.
Although he is the only Division I hockey player among them and has his eyes on the NHL, he has no intention of being the only hockey player Nicholas without a high school department.
“I can’t let that happen,” he said with a laugh.
Of course, Nicholas has won other championships. His most recent was last month as a member of the selection team for men under 17 at the Five Nations Tournament in Vispi, Switzerland.
The United States took the championship and played their games against Switzerland, Germany, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Nicholas, who played largely in the top row for the United States, ended the tournament with two goals and two assists and perhaps boosted self-confidence.
He said he participated in the tournament to find out how the US hockey program in developing countries is comparable to programs in other countries, and how he personally compares the best young international players who may be future NHL players.
“I felt pretty good. I felt I could compete with anyone out there,” Nicholas noted.
Next summer, he hopes to compete for the United States in Canada in the U-18 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, which hosts many of the world’s best hockey prospects each year.
“This tournament is really big. All NHL Scouts are there,” Nicholas noted.
At times, he continues to work on his game – something he’s basically been doing since he was 5, when he decided he wanted to play college hockey and play in the NHL.
“I want to be a little faster and a little better in everything,” he said.
