Cricket: White ferns fall short in the first ODI against England

England have won New Zealand in the 30th round of the first day of cricket in Bristol.

The world champions were eliminated by 241, but they limited the White Ferns to 211, bowling New Zealand in 47th place in the first of five ODIs between the pages.

Amy Satterthwaite fought unbeaten out of 79 balls to give White Ferns an outside chance towards the end of the game, but it was eventually over-caught when England cruised to a nice win.

England captain Heather Knight led the way for the hosts with 89 runs.

White fern captain Sophie Devine, who made 34 balls out of 59 balls, was disappointed not to chase England’s goal but took the positive side of the game.

“It ended up pretty close. It just shows that the deeper we take the game, the closer it can get. Really proud of the work done there, but we know we have a lot to do with the next game,” Devine said.

“We thought the 250 was on this pair. I thought it was a pretty quiet fairway, I thought it was a good field and we were happy to keep them especially after the start of England. Coming to the canopies at half time We knew for sure we could do it.

“We talked about holding guards in a hand, which unfortunately we didn’t do, but we can see the damage our lower order can do if this opportunity comes in. If we can hit with that pair of hands above 30, it’s going to be a game on.

“I think it’s a positive thing we’re going to eliminate. There are so many things that if we had done this better with a ball, field or racket, I think we would have been on the other side of the accounts. So much positive to take from today.”
