GILLETTE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – Tennis athletes from across Wyoming gather in the northeast corner of the state to fight for the state championship. The first round of the matches began on Thursday and the champions will be crowned on Saturday.
Matches are split between Gillette’s Thunder Basin and Campbell County High Schools. Other matches will also be held at Bicentennial Park and the Gillettes Indoor Facility.
The individuals played a maximum of two matches on Thursday, with the semi-finals starting on Friday.
There were quite a few semi-finalists in Casper and Cheyenne High Schools.
Souths Andrew Lock and Kelly Walshs Austin Putnam start in the boys ’# 1 doubles to get a place in the championship match. Putnam is the defending state champion in the boys ’# 1 singles.
Jackson Catchpole, another Kelly Walsh defending state champion in the # 2 boys ’singles, will face Paulo Mellizon in the boys’ # 2 doubles semi-finals. On the other side of the bracket, Souths Nikolas Lock is waiting for Hayden Clark from Jackson.
Also playing in the semi-finals are Kelly Walshs # 1 – doubles team, Phillips – Rasmussen and # 2 – doubles team – Yakel – Putnam. Centrals Villalobos -Alvarado – Ellison are the # 3 doubles semi-finals.
Among the girls, Ashli Smedley and Natrona Countys Theresa Trvajova will face one in the semi-finals. Kelly Walshs Finley Klinger is on the other side of the bracket, and Trojan Gabriella Blumberg is second in the semi-finals.
Easts OBrien – Kastens and Kelly Walshs Strand – Nokes are facing each other on opposite sides of the girls’ # 1 double bracket. Their # 2 doubles, Klinger – Catchpole and Baktamarian – Murphy, will also play in the semifinals. Centrals Tempel – Tyler receives Trojans.
Two double pairs of Casper play in the # 3 doubles semi-finals. Kelly Walshs Collins – Wilson and Natrona Countys Colling – Warelin are on opposite sides of the bracket.
Kelly Walsh’s boys (13.5 points) and girls (17 points) are on the team scoreboard after Thursday. Southern boys rank fifth (9 points), and Central Girls (9.5 points) and Natrona County Girls (9 points) are also among the top five.
