HINGHAM – They started late and end late, and along the way, Notre Dame Academy’s spring sports teams have squeezed everything out of this season that they could. It includes two appearances in the southern finals (tennis, lacrosse), a trip to the All-State Athletics Championships, the golf team’s South Series Championship and a performance in the third round of the softball state tournament.
They say you’ll always remember that ride, not the final destination, and no doubt it’s been a pretty easy trip for the NDA this spring:
TENNIS
Springs already turned summer, but the NDAtennis team is not yet ready to end the game. Cougarswon won the Division 2 South title on Saturday and will play in the state championships on Monday morning against Winchester (16-0) at Woburn High.
9-0 The regular season got Cougars’ second seed Div. 2 front bracket. Norton and Norwell were broadcast quickly, both in live series, in the two initial rounds of the tournament. That’s when the real fun started.
First, they defeated Duxbury, 3-2, in last Thursday’s episodes. It set up on Saturdays to match top seed and invincible Foxborough. They wouldn’t be undefeated long after the NDA took another 3-2 win to get a southern title.
Senior Alex Prudente picked up the NDA’s only single win against Duxbury in his 6-1, 6-0 match. Bella LaGressa / Amelia Maw and Sarah Link / Megan Ravanesi double teams also won.
Prudente once again led the way by winning his first singles against Foxborough, which is not surprising given his written career. Shes has been playing the first singles since seventh grade and has lost just one high school match freshman since his season. Prudente have lost just three games this season. For the NDA, the same duel teams also won the victory over Duxbury.
LACROSSE
The NDA’s lacrosse group reached Div. 1 South final, but Home Field Westwood High beat them on Sunday 13-8.
The goals of Kylie Wilson and Jane Hilsabeck gave the NDA a quick 2-0 lead, but Westwood was just amazed for a moment. They turned the course quickly and led 5-2 after the quarter and then 8-4 at halftime. Westwood coach Margot Spatola, from Hingham, said lacrosse is a running game and the wolver only needed a moment to own.
They scored two quick goals, but it didn’t bother us in such an early game. We just had to calm down and start playing the game. Once we were done, things started to go our own way and we got back into the game, Spatola said. We made small mistakes early in the game, and things turned around once we fixed those holes.
A player with a senior attack, Ashley Mack on your side, can fix anything that might be a problem for the team. He scored five times in victory and led a balanced Westwood offensive attack that kept the NDA trapped in its offensive zone for long matches.
While it wasn’t exactly the end they were looking for, this was an incredible season for the Cougars. Despite last season’s absence due to the pandemic and the return of only four retirees, the NDA finished 16-2 and defeated Hingham, Barnstable and Scituate to reach the title game.
This season was significant and I couldn’t be more proud to think of what four seniors (Kylie Wilson, Fiona Williams, Margaret Masuret and Berit Cedarlund) have done for this program, NDA coach Meredith Frank McGinnis said. They set the tone for us this season. Its June 27, and they can no longer log in. They could not have cared more and represented this program better.
We’ve got two eighth graders and three freshmen on the list this season. Almost everyone is coming back. Well learn from this loss and grow. I am very excited to see them in front of them.
One of these first, Aubrey McMahon, started and finished scoring and added two more goals to four. Wilson scored twice, while Bella Taylor and Jane Hilsabeck added one goal in the loss.
SOFTBALL
The NDA reached the Div.2 South playoffs in fourth, with a record 12-2. They won East Bridgewater in the first round 7-5 and then lost to Foxborough in the semi-finals 5-0.
ATHLETICS
The Cougars were in action this weekend as part of the Norwell High School All-Statech Championships.
Plymouths Paige Joyce was 12th in the mile at 5:09.94.
Joyce also worked with her twin sister Lauren, Olivia Mucciand and Emma Kates in a 4×800 meter post. They came in 20th at 10: 16.82.
GOLF
Cougar also has a great year with golf links. They made it to the state championship after winning the South Sectionals last Monday at Ridder Farm Golf Club in East Bridgewater. The state championship is on Tuesday at the Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown.
Jacqueline Cingel led with 80 in the cross-sectional qualifier and placed second in the overall list for Hinghams Piper Jordan. Jillian Johnson and Elle de Andrade each shot for 85 NDAs, while Anna LaCicero had 92. As a team, the NDA shot a total of 342. Duxbury was second and Hingham finished third in the team competition.
