Ala-Dauphin, Palmyra’s field hockey ends the second match in a draw 1-1

It’s no surprise that Tuesday night’s competition between Palmyra and Lower Dauphin’s field hockey went into an exciting overtime.

The two power plants in the Keystone division ended their healthy competition in a 1-1 draw. It’s a new area for previously undefeated Falcons.

However, the last 15 minutes really brought back and forth between the Palmyra teams.

After the first half, when the Cougars scored a goal, and after the second half, when the Falcons scored, the overtime did not add enough time to the clock for one to inevitably fall.

Overtime is played with six field players and a goalkeeper on both sides. The first player to score a goal wins and the game ends. Neither team managed to win.

After a few minutes, the Palmyras team rushed towards the barrel to the goal, but Payton Killian, the Falcons goalkeeper, stopped him. Under pressure, Killian noticed the movement of the field players.

I dove out, he was coming in, and it looked like he was pulling to the left, so I dove to the left and got the ball, Killian said. And my defense was ready to get it off me.

Palmyras goalkeeper Haleigh Lambert was equally impressive.

Penalty angles are slightly different in overtime and usually offer more attack. During the game, there may be five defenders in the cage, including a goalkeeper. In overtime, its four defenders, including the goalkeeper.

In the lower corner of the penalty area, Lambert blocked one, but two shots easily. When asked about the game, his mind wandered back to regulation as the Falcons scored a goal from the penalty corner.

I think the corner shot was a very good shot and it was very unlucky on our part, Lambert said. But I feel like we played a great game and I think I played a great game.

Paige Bitting scored a goal for the Falcons in 8 minutes in the third quarter of the game. Alexa Derr was the first to score a Cougars goal in the second quarter with 13 seconds left.

There were great moments from start to finish. Among them was senior defender Emily Rissers, who stopped a powerful shot from the goal line that temporarily cleared the Falcons.

I thought both teams were playing exceptionally high level hockey, Lower Dauphin head coach Linda Kreiser said. I was very proud of our girls when I was getting a tie at half time. We also had other opportunities, but we just didn’t realize them. I have to pay tribute to their defense. Their goalkeeper had an exceptional game today.

Palmyra head coach Kent Harshman said much the same. Palmyra lost 1-0 to Ala-Dauphin in her first meeting in 2021.

These games are not end-of-season games, Harshman said. They have a lot of competition for both of us to prepare for the post-season. Were in different ratings. And what better way to prepare for your team after a season than to be in a fight like this.
