Return to court Ash Barty this season looks less likely after World No. 1 was eliminated from the Australian team for next month’s Billie Jean King Cup final in Prague.
The Wimbledon champion, who returned to Australia after leaving the third round at the US Open in September, led his country to the final of the Fed’s final series in 2019.
The women’s team tournament was canceled due to last year’s global health crisis and was later named in honor of American pioneer King.
Former US Open champion Sam Stosur, another Fed Cup stable, will also make it to the finals on November 1-6 with world No. 47 Ajla Tomljanovic, Astra Sharma and Storm Sanders, as well as debuts Ellen Perez and Olivia Gadeck.
Ajla has had an amazing year and this is a great opportunity for her to lead the team, Captain Alicia Molik said in a statement. Storm and Astra are both awesome team players, and it’s exciting to welcome Ellen and Olivia to the team for the first time.
Australia won the Fed Cup seven times and the last championship in 1971.
Barty missed most of the 2020 season when the Covid-19 pandemic took over the world and decided to stay in Australia, where the new coronavirus was initially successfully suppressed.
The 25-year-old returned to tour this year and won five championships, including a virgin Wimbledon championship at the All England Club in July.
His management team said last month that Barty may not defend the WTA final championship he won in Shenzhen in 2019 when the season-ending elite race returns to Mexico on November 8th.
All those arriving in Australia from abroad must still enforce a 14-day mandatory hotel quarantine.
