The Smith Academy field hockey defeated Southwick 3-2

HATFIELD Despite the rain, the Smith Academy field hockey team presented the show on Tuesday.

The Falcons battled visiting Southwick and eventually took a tight 3-2 win in the Valley League.

It has been a time of celebration so far. The Falcons improved by 9-0-1, although it didn’t come easily with Southwick in town.

Smith Academy had beaten the Rams 5-0 when the teams met to open the season, although Southwick did not leave easily on Tuesday in a rematch. The adjustment lasted a full quarter as both teams had an undefeated opening in 15 minutes.

Our energy and game really went up in the third and fourth quarters, Smith Academy coach Judy Strong said. We talked more, passed more and we had more people around the ball.

We have 10 seniors on the team and you have veteran leadership. You have that senior, this is it, and they couldn’t play last year because of the COVID situation, Strong said. I think this is especially special for them.

Cat Kokoski, Charlotte Hennings and Makena Valentine all hit the Smith Academy victory, while Crista Kemp and Elena Baarnoski got the entry point. Smith goalkeeper Hadley Szynal blocked five times.

South Hadley 3, Agawam 1 The big first half took the Tigers to a 3-1 Suburban League win over the Brownies on Tuesday in South Hadley.

South Hadley (6-1-2) led 3-0 at halftime to Gabi Moroney, Jenna Hobert and Lily Provost. Isabella Alcaraz and Ashley Scott created entry points for Tigers, and goalkeeper Kaitlyn Lynes stopped 13 shots to keep Agawam at bay.

Next up is South Hadley on a key road slope Thursday night in Minnechaug.

Raja 3, Minnechaug 2 Emily DeMaio was involved in all three Frontier goals and helped Redhawks represent the Falcons in the 3–2 Suburban League on Tuesday in South Deerfield.

DeMaio made the match once and helped the other two win. Rebecca Wallace-West and Ashley Taylor also scored goals for Frontier and Maeve Huit added a pass. Ella Flanders recorded nine fights in the Frontier network.

Belchertown 1, Franklin Tech 1 Adianna Dubuque created the Orioles team to lead 1-0 before Eagles created a tie just before Half Time.

Abigail Olden assisted in the Dubuques match. Belchertown goalkeeper Eliza Rothstein blocked eight times.

Amherst 1, Athol 0 Caitlin MacDougall scored the only goal of the game with 13:58 left in the third quarter to raise the Hurricanes.

Maria Konieczny assisted with a count, and goalkeeper McKenzie Schreyer stopped all 11 shots he faced during the stoppage.

Northampton 1, Turners Falls 1 Pearl David leveled the game when the Blue Devils were on the road at 13:04. Northampton responded to the hosts from three angles.

Blue Devils put six shots into the frame.

Boys soccer

Belchertown 3, Minnechaug 0 Jack Holt buried a couple of goals in the Orioles 3-0 win on Tuesday.

Nathan Davis also scored in Belchertown, and points were awarded to Dominic Mancuso, Joe Bianco and Shay ONeill. Jacob Chaisson saved the cut-off with one block.

Northampton 2, Chicopee Comp 1 Ryland Breen and Brady McDonald found the net for the second half of the Blue Devils.

John Senn-McNally Zeke Kimball added each pass.

Alex Caldonaro defeated Northampton seven times.

Gate 1, Hoosac Valley 0 The Gators won the winner in the first half.

Girls playing football

Smith Voke 3, PVCICS 0 Madison Clark scored and scored for Vikings in a 3-0 win.

Ayla Mechachonis and Kaleah Gamache also won, while Morgan Ball added a pass.

Smith Voke goalkeeper Maggie Lauder blocked five times, while PVCICS Maeve Doherty blocked 13 shots.

Easthampton 0, Holyoke 0 Purple Knights goalkeeper Jayvah Stuckey turned nine shots at home, and Eagles goalkeeper Addison Barr blocked six in a draw.

Northampton 0, Chicopee 0 Caroline Riordan made three fights to keep the game clean at home in the draw. Blue Devils put 21 shots into the Pacers net.

Hopkins Academy 3, Pioneer Regional 0 Tia Fyden took part in all three Golden Hawks goals. He assisted Helen Vissa in the 27th minute and found the net himself in the 55th and 73rd minutes.

Cassidy Fyden saved three shots.

Anna Dyjach and Helen Vissas also got assists at Hopkins Academy.

Golf

Northampton 23, Raja All six Blue Devils shot 46 or better on Tuesdays when they won the Frontier at Northampton Country Club.

Galen Fowles was the medalist of the match with 2-over-37, followed by Evan Yurko (39) and Jack Mattison Gulotta (40). Reilly Fowles (41), Camille Richmond (43) and Ben OConnor (46) also played well in Northampton, improving perfectly in the 11-0 season.

Frontiers Cam Skiffington (49) scored the only point for the Redhawks.

Hopkins 14, Greenfield 10 Hopkins Academy won a 14-10 win over Greenfield at the Holyoke Country Club on Tuesday behind Connor Asselin’s medalistic performance.

Asselin shot 43 and won three points in his match at the Golden Hawks. Tyler St.Hilaire shot 51 and won 2 points from Hopkins, while Taylor Barry (54), Christian Ciolkos (55), Benson Li and Nolan Struspeck (64) won points out of the team’s total.

Ware 16, South Hadley 8 Ben Gardiner won three points in his match in 4th place for the Tigers with a loss to Ware Tuesday.

Keegan Earle shared four points with Wares Doug Mulligan in first place, while South Hadleys Nick Hartley, Bennett Allen and John Viola won one point.

Hampshire 14, Monson 10 Levi Zielinski took the Raiders Medal Award and shot 39 in Beaver Brook. He defeated Mason Dumas 3-1.

Hampshires Owen Lech climbed to Averee Nissenbaum No. 4 3-1.

Raiders No. 5 Pryden Messier defeated Tyler LaBonten 3-. No. 6 Tim Florek took care of Charlie Wahlund.

Boys cross country skiing

Gate 25, Easthampton 33 Dominic Zajko defeated the Gators at 14:59, followed by teammate Jacob Maynard in second (15:20). Gateways Jesse Balboi finished fifth (18:23), Logan Hawley eighth (18:50) and Jeff Antonellis ninth (19:30).

Easthamptons Leverett Horrigan finished third (15:21). Gianni Soucy was fourth (15:39), James Aquino sixth (18:29) and Braden Lynn seventh (18:45).

Greenfield 15, Hopkins Academy 48 Chris Rex finished seventh (18:17) and Jackson Graham eighth (20:17) to the Golden Hawks at home.

Girls cross country skiing

Gate 18, Easthampton 46 Gateway seventh-grader Anya Niles set a new track record and passed Huntington’s 2.4-mile track in 17 minutes and 42 seconds to lead the Gators (10-0).

Gateway had the first three runners, second Alexandra Henrichon (18:42) and third Sawyer Wilkinson (19:42).

Easthamptons Brooke Bongiovanni finished fourth overall at 19:52, while teammates Marley Reardon (sixth, 20:46) and Julianne Markee (10th, 24:40) broke into the top ten. Gateways Lucy Pitoniak was overall Fifth (20:41).

Hopkins Academy beat Greenfield There were not enough runners in the green wave to compete for the meeting.

Auroroa Dnota-Venman finished third for the Golden Hawks (20:36). Cora White was fifth (25:15), Eve Lanzafame sixth (25:15), Autumn Casagrande seventh (28:21) and Ruby Peiffer eighth (28:22).
