The historic Bulldog victory over Alabama was remembered
Former Georgia TE Pat Hodgson undoubtedly remembers UGA’s biggest win over Alabama in 1965 and one of the biggest (and most controversial) games during the story race.
Georgia and Alabama football teams played every season from 1941 to 1965 – except in 1943.
Alabama won three national championships during that stretch, led by legendary head coach Bear Bryant.
Georgia was the only team to win the Alabama National Championship in 1965. That season, the Bulldogs were led by their own legendary head coach: Vince Dooley. It was Dooley’s second season as head coach of Georgian football.

The Bulldogs won 1-3 against Alabama in the 70s before the race broke down again.

Georgia and Alabama met twice in the 80s and broke the series.
Changes in coaching
Georgia Record vs. Alabama 1990-1995: 1-3
There were several coaching changes in Alabama and Georgia from the late 80s to the 90s.
Georgia ranked in the Top 25 of the Associated Press of the season seven times during that period, but the Bulldogs ’highest ranking was 8th in 1992.
That year, Alabama ran the table and finished second in the national championship. It would take 17 years for Crimson Tide to win the next one.
Georgia is the best in Alabama at the turn of the millennium
Georgia Record vs. Alabama 2002-2008: 3-1
Alabama’s superiority in college football to Georgia didn’t always feel guaranteed.
Georgia won its first three encounters against an enemy of the Southeast Conference under head coach Mark Richt. Georgia’s first two victories over Alabama in the 21st century were before head coach Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloo. Richt’s Bulldogs faced Mike Shulan Crimson Tide and swept the home and away series between two programs: 27-25 in 2002 and 37-23 in 2003.
The first meeting between Richt’s Bulldogs and Nick Saban was a 26-23 overtime win for Georgia in Tuscaloosa in 2007, Saban’s first season as head coach of Alabama Crimson Tide. Georgia lost to Alabama in Athens the following year. This loss was the start of Alabama’s current seven-match winning streak against Georgia.

The pain of the 2018 College Football Playoff national championship match for Georgia Bulldogs football fans is perhaps more recent than the team’s most recent defeat in the 2021 Southeast Conference Championships.
Four of the last seven matches between teams have been played in “neutral” places – all four games were played at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta or the Georgia Dome.
REMEMBER THE GEORGIAN DOME
Georgia lost the 2012 SEC Championship in the red zone when the time was up. Georgia led in the fourth quarter, but Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron led Crimson Tide to a goal that left Georgia to score 3:15 and needed a touchdown. Alabama won the Notre Dame BCS National Championship. Georgia won the Capital One Bowl in Nebraska.
Georgia met at the Alabama Championship in Atlanta just over five years later. Alabama won the national championship on January 9, 2018 in overtime when quarterback Tua Tagovailoa contacted a wide receiver and future Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith in a 41-yard pass.
Georgia lost two more SEC Championships to Alabama in 2018 and 2021. Georgia led 28-21 in the fourth quarter of the 2018 SEC Championship before Alabama snatched a win. Georgia’s most recent match with Alabama in the 2021 SEC Championship is the only loss the Bulldogs suffered this season.
Georgia also won the regular season matches 0-2 against Alabama in 2015 and 2020.
