This week at K-State Sports: Tennis, men’s golf tourism, football returns home

While the football and volleyball teams are taking a break, it’s the opposite for the other teams in action this week.

Tennis:

The tennis team last visited the court at the Ole Miss Invitational in September and ended up strong with 12 wins on invitation. Coming to the Wildcats this week at the ITF W15 Hilton Head Championship at the Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Monday, Oct. 4 – Sunday, Oct. 10.

Florentine Dekkers, a native of Ammerzoden, the Netherlands, competed in the tournament.

“It’s a great opportunity for Florentine or any of our players to attend a professional event,” head coach Jordon Smith said. “Our goal is to help them reach their highest level, either as a collegiate tennis player first and hopefully also professionally.”

Men’s golf:

The men’s golf team ended a week ago outside the top five at the Old Town Collegiate Invitational behind red-shirt freshman Cooper Schultz. Schultz, second-class student Luke O’Neill, senior Will Hopkins and junior Tim Tillmanns, were all in the top 30 during two rounds of play — helping the team reach 10-under par 550, with just six shots from outside the top five.

The team traveled to Sugar Grove, Illinois, competing at the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Northern Illinois on Sunday and Monday.

Tillmanns (139, 5-under-par) ended the draw with a third to final day, Hopkins (145, 1-over-par), O’Neill (146, 2-over-par) and freshman Nicklaus Mason (148, 4-over-par) par ) are also all in the top 50.

Football:

The K-State national football team (6-6, 1-2 Big 12) returned home to host West Virginia this week after winning a 2-1 overtime victory over Kansas at the Sunflower Showdown last week. This season the team has conceded an average of 15.6 shots per match and scored 1.33 goals per game.

Much of this production comes from the junior transfer from Marisa Weichel, who currently leads the team with five goals and 10 points. Second-year goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer played one of the best games of her career against Kansas and recorded the top 10 fights of her career.

K-State will host the West Virginia team, which is currently 8-2-1 and 2-0 in the Big 12. Mountaineers averaged 14.6 shots per game when they put the ball in the back of the net an average of 2.27 times per game.

The mountaineers come into battle behind redshirt striker Lauren Segalla, who currently leads the team with five goals and 10 points.

Kayza Massey, of Ottawa, the junior of Ontario, who currently has 19 fights per season and only 6 goals will be abandoned in 2021, is likely to come to the mountaineering finish line.
