What a week of college football. Not just in Big Ten, but across the country as the CFB gods blessed us with several epic games and dramas we want. And it never gets old. Just when you think college football has served one of the best seasons ever, we seem to be doing it again next year.
So far this season, we’ve seen several top dogs go down even in the middle of the schedule. The state of Ohio and Clemson lost early, Notre Dame fell last week, and Alabama got an entry in the right-hand column last weekend. If any year is open, this is it.
Now from Big Ten. Each week we rank the teams according to who plays best in our weekly power rankings, and it certainly looked like the league was as open as it had been for a long time. The state of Ohio tried to find its identity and staff early, while teams like Iowa, Penn State, Michigan and the state of Michigan defeated all challengers.
Iowa, Michigan and Michigan State are still invincible, but Penn State fell from the top of the hill to No Iowa on Saturday. Then there is a large fiery red and gray elephant in the room. Not so quietly, the Buckeyes look like the Buckeyes again, and it undoubtedly has the best attack on the country and consistently better defense.
All of this has changed our ten great orders of power after week 6 as we call for the return of the king.

Reason for investment
The good news is that Northwestern didn’t lose the U.S. football game this week. The bad news is that the wild cats were not saying goodbye and not on the field showing signs of life. Pat Fitzgerald is one of the best coaches in the game, but he just doesn’t have a lot of work to do this year.

Reason for investment
There is no way Illini would win over Nebraska if the two agreed again at this point in the season. Bret Bielema’s reconstruction is alive and well, and another loss, this time to his former Wisconsin club.

Reason for investment
Indiana still has the ability to make life miserable for one of the competing teams, but something is just missing from that team. There has been too much inconsistency in waiting for the Hoosiers to make a quick turnaround. Maybe this last week’s vacation will help.

Reason for investment
In terms of talent, Nebraska is likely to deserve a higher ranking. However, when a team is constantly losing to nearby games, something just doesn’t click. The Huskers went toes with Michigan, but lost again in a heartbreaking way. Until Scott Frost finds a way to make his team one that finds ways to win instead of losing, we can’t have Big Red’s rise in power order.

It seems that history repeats itself again in College Park. Maryland always looks like a threat to out-of-league teams, but folds and withers when the league game begins. The Terps simply don’t have the depth to receive some of the injuries they deal with, as evidenced by two outrageous embarrassing losses, the last of which was in the hands of Ohio State 66-17. In one word; Oops.

Reason for investment
Wisconsin returned to the victory column, but it was against Illinois. Teams aren’t going to get the credit for winning the unfortunate Illini team right now, and there are still some real problems at the head of the attack that need to show signs of life. No changes this week for Badgers. We still need to see more in the ward.

Purdue was off this week, so there really is no reason to change where the boiler manufacturers were last week. The team has looked good so far this year, but we haven’t seen anything close to a statement win to measure the roof of West Lafayette.

Reason for investment
The season, which looked so promising, is starting to calm down a bit. There’s still considerable improvement under Greg Schiano, but just playing a good team close to half the football won’t lead you to stretch goals that we’re sure of in Rutgers ’minds this season. This is still not a bad team, but the Scarlet Knights had to make a statement against the state of Michigan, and it didn’t happen in the second half.

Reason for investment
Minnesota was gone this week, so we couldn’t take anything from what we saw on the field. So far, the Golden Gophers have sometimes looked really good and confused others. This is probably what we’ll see for the rest of the year, so we’ll raise Minnesota one place more than what Rutgers couldn’t do instead of believing where this team is going.

The state of Michigan is just fading away. Spartans aren’t blatant and don’t always look fantastic, but they just do whatever it takes to win, and confidence grows. As the team continues to win, it will continue to believe and develop into one that might just throw the wrench at other Eastern Division plans.

Michigan still wins, but does so much as a competitor to the state of Michigan. The Wolverines are a physical force that can get it on the field and play a good defense, and the victory over Nebraska at Lincoln is greatly underestimated. Corn and blue are winning, and we wonder what happens when they face a team with better athletes. The big games continue against Penn State, Michigan State and Ohio State.

Penn State lost a tough match in Iowa City, but we never know what would have happened if quarterback Sean Clifford hadn’t been injured. This team is still good and still has a say in who comes from the East Division to head to India for the Big Ten Championship.

Reason for investment
There are still some concerns about the Iowa attack, but the defense is still playing well and forcing opponents to make a lot of mistakes. The Hawkeyes found a way to clear up enough crimes and beat the Penn State team that was left to try to get the job done without a starting quarterback. Say what you want, but victory is victory, victory, and now the Hawkes are the second best in the country.

Reason for investment
Anyone who has been following the league for the past couple of weeks needs to understand that the state of Ohio looks like the state of Ohio again. The attack now knows what it is and who to play, and while the defense continues to improve, it’s much better and much more aggressive than what we saw in the first few games. Yes, it’s the king’s return to the top of the Big Ten order of power and the team continues to improve.
