Boston College Athletics Wrap Up, Week 6: Men’s Hockey Wins Icebreaker, Women’s Cross Country Wins New England Championship

Men’s cross-country skiing

The Eagles finished in tenth place in the New England Championship over the weekend. The Eagles didn’t have the top 20 single finishes in the men’s 8K – second-year Steven Jackson led the Eagles and came in 24th with a time of 25:22. BC had a couple of top 20 rankings in the 8K section: Will Purnell (9th place, 26:24) and Edward Tristine (13th place, 26:38).

TL; DR: The Eagles finished tenth in the New England Championship.

Women’s cross-country skiing

The Eagles were the number one team in the New England Championship, rising to first place and recording several of the top 20 goals. Lauren White won the race overall and came in first with a time of 17:14. The other 20 Eagles finalists in the women’s 5K series were Anna Oeser (3rd, 5:24 pm), Sarah Flynn (7th, 5:50 pm), Kylee Raftis (10th, 5:53 pm) and Paige Carter (5:58 pm) .

At lower university, 5K BC also had several of the top 20 finishers. Katherine Mitchell won the race at 18:19. He was followed by Kayla Smith (2nd, 18:21), Ella Whitman (3rd, 6:36 pm), Katherine Connolly (4th, 18:49), Miriam Ruoff (5th, 18:43), Roshni Singh (6th ., 18.): 45), Maureen Lewin (7., 18.45), Caroline Barry (11, 19:06) and Jacklyn Sullivan (19:36).

TL; DR: Lauren White led BC to first place in the New England Championship.

Hockey

The Eagles opened UVA on Saturday over the weekend. The game was goalless throughout regulation: BC scored 6 shots and Jonna Kennedy fought 5 times against UVA. BC scored in the only extra time when Elizabeth Warner was able to shoot the ball behind the UVA goalkeeper and earn BC’s victory 1-0. Warner’s goal was waved towards the end of the game, so this was a good redemption moment for the team.

On Sunday, the Eagles headed for Richmond. Margo Carlin started scoring early in the second set and scored a BC victory 1-0. Sky Caron took BC’s 2-0 set late in the same period, taking a penalty kick and giving the Eagles a nice lead at halftime. Victoria Arra added the Eagles lead as the clock turned and made 3-0 BC in the final minutes. The Eagles only allowed 4 shots to finish.

TL; DR: The field hockey played 2-0 over the weekend and beat UVA and Richmond.

Men’s and women’s golf

The men’s golf team finished 14th in the Fighting Irish Classic earlier this week. BC’s lead rival was Nick Cummings, who tied for 33rd place with +5.

The women’s golf team earned first place at the Yale Invitational. Natalie Irlbacher took a personal first place -4. With him among the top five was Biblani Liu, who finished fourth.

TL; DR: The women’s team won first place in the Yale Invitational, while the men’s team finished 14th in the Fighting Irish Classic.

Men’s hockey

The men’s hockey team won the Ice Breaker tournament over the weekend and won the trophy Quinnipiac, Holy Cross and Northeastern (which the Eagles didn’t play).

On Friday, BC moved to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals scored by Colby Ambrosion and Patrick Giles before Quinnipiac decided to tie things up. The game continued for overtime and then for the match. Both teams scored one goal in the first three rounds of shooting, and BC’s goal came from Eamon Powell. Eric Dop stopped the Quinnipiacs in the fourth round, and Casey Carreau scored on BC to get BC a penalty win, which is actually counted as a draw.

On Saturday, the Eagles ruled the Holy Cross to win the game and tournament. Brandon Kruse got things done in just 22 seconds to put BC in the 1-0 lead, and Marshall Warren and Marc McLaughlin added a goal in the following minutes to give BC a 3-0 lead just over 3 minutes into the game.

At this point, it was obvious that the players of Pyhä Risti lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented. McLaughling scored one more goal in the first period, and Quinnipiac scored their own goal when the period ended to stop BC’s closing chances. Matt Argentina scored the only second goal of the game, and BC won this 5-1.

TL; DR: The Eagles won 1-0-1 over the weekend and won the Ice Breaker tournament.

Women’s hockey

BC will remain undefeated after this weekend thanks to a 2-1 win over Merrimack. Katie Pyne scored the winner of the first half of the match and scored 1-0 for BC in the winning game. Willow Corson added a second goal in the second period, and while Merrimack scored with a goal force in the third set, it was too late for the Warriors to return. BC goal Abigail Levy played another great game and fought 34 times.

TL; DR: The Eagles beat Merrimack 2-1 this weekend and improved overall 3-0.

Men’s football

The Eagles started the week in Northeast Europe and took the win 2-1 against the Huskies on Tuesday. Drew Serafino scored the first goal of BC and created a great opportunity to make himself the first collegial goal after less than 2 minutes of play. Neither team scored again until 43:26 when Michael Suski fired a 2-0 penalty from BC. The Northeast cut BC’s lead to 1 in the 74th minute, but the Eagles kept the victory 2-1.

This weekend, the Eagles went to Virginia to take in UVA radiation. Aidan Farwell took the Eagles 1-0 lead early in the game and made his first career, but Leo Afonso scored a UVA goal later in the match and took the Cavaliers victory.

TL; DR: The Eagles won 1-1 this week and defeated the Northeast before UVA radiation.

Women’s soccer

The Eagles will continue to struggle in the ACC game as they dropped to both UVA and UNC this week. For the first time this week, BC will host UVA. The Eagles closed, they only got 2 shots to finish and lost 3-0.

The Eagles were the first to score # 5 against Tar Heels this weekend when Sam Smith took Jenna Bike to score 49:20. Tar Heels equalized late in the second half and sent the match to extra time. UNC took a loose ball during the extra time and won 2-1.

TL; DR: BC lost to UVA and UNC this week, even though they took # 5 to UNC overtime.

Volleyball

The Eagles had completely swept this week, losing matches to Louisville and Our Lady. Initially, BC headed to Kentucky, where the Cardinals dominated the straight series 25-14, 25-12 and 25-10. The Cardinals made 9 aces and made 40 kills in BC.

The Eagles played a more competitive game against Fighting Irish, but still lost in the straight series 25-22, 25-15 and 25-23. BC made 4 aces in the loss, and Anna Murphy led all the players in 18 wells.

TL; DR: B.C. Fell in both Louisville and Notre Dame.
