F1 will benefit from cost caps and rule changes, Ross Brawn says

Formula 1 fans will see the benefits of this year’s cost cap and new rules for 2022, sports CEO Ross Brawn said on Tuesday with a championship knife blade.

Mercedes seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen have changed hands repeatedly since March.

Four teams and six drivers have won the race so far, although Verstappen has won seven and Hamilton five.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt that the price cap and the rule changes implemented will have a positive impact on the proximity and intensity of the championship,” Brawn said in a column on the www.formula1.com website.

“The team doesn’t have the ability to pour huge resources into the championship and try to escape with it. Resources are now limited and teams will also focus on next year’s car, which will require a lot of time and resources.

“We still want meritocracy. We still want the best team to win. But we don’t want them to win a mile of land just because they have a bigger budget than anyone else. It’s nice to see how things are evolving.”

Mercedes, the winners of the last seven drivers and builders ’championships, said in June that this year’s car development has stalled and the team will focus on major changes next season.

The champions were 40 points away from Red Bull after eight races, but are now 36 ahead.

The $ 145 million budget limit introduced during this period will be dropped to $ 135 million in 2023.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner told reporters after the Turkish GP on Sunday that the selection of winners had been a great feature of the season – among them Alpine’s Esteban Ocon and McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo.

“It feels really a shame to change it for next year,” he added.

Brawn disagreed, saying the underlying problems still need to be addressed as cars continue to find it difficult to keep track of each other closely.

“This weekend, I heard comments on whether changes to the 2022 regulation are needed because we are currently enjoying the golden age,” he said.

“While the 2022 rules won’t change the situation overnight, I think they’re a much better platform to improve competition on the track.”
