(Reuters) – Andy Murray secured his first win in the top ten on Monday, 14 months after former world champion beat Hubert Hurkacz 6-4 6-7 (6) 6-3 at the Vienna Open.
Murray had lost 10th place in the world at Cincinnati and Metz earlier this year, but won the Polish on the third try and won the first round after two hours and 41 minutes of grueling competition.
It was the 34-year-old’s first top 10 victory since three-time Grand Slam champion defeated Alexander Zverev in Cincinnati in August 2020.
“It was a good match that could have gone in either direction,” said Murray, who underwent hip surgery in 2018 and 2019 and is currently ranked 156th.
“I was disappointed with the feed when I dropped in the third opening game, but luckily I got a break back in the next game and from there I would probably deserve to get over the line. It was a good victory in difficult circumstances. “
In the second round, Murray will face 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz of Spain.
