The name of the convicted sex offender is a step closer to the removal of the final hockey prize.
According to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, Chicago Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz sent a letter to Hockey Hall of Fame director Lanny MacDonald on Friday morning asking for Brad Aldrich’s name to be removed from the Stanley Cup following a report released this week about numerous sex crimes committed during Aldrich’s time. as the team’s video coach for the 2009-10 season.
“Aldrich’s participation in the team during the 2010 season has undermined the players’ exceptional work that year, ”Wirtz explained in the letter.
“The Stanley Cup features the names of some of the most talented athletes in hockey. But so does the name ‘Brad Aldrich,’ whose role as a video coach made him worthy of the engraving. However, his behavior rejected him, and it was a mistake to state his name.”
“We’re sorry we let that happen.”
While MacDonald serves as chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame, the decision to change any name engraved on the Stanley Cup does not belong to him. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has the final say on this.
It would be safe to assume that upon receipt of this letter, MacDonald will forward it to Bettman, who will eventually ask if Aldrich’s name and his symbol of participation in the Blackhawks 2010 victory in the Stanley Cup will be removed.
