UMaine will be out of Northeastern at the opening of the Hockey East season

October 30 – The University of Maine men’s hockey team played the unforgettable Hockey East opening game at Northeastern’s Matthews Arena in Boston on Friday night.

Northeast-second-year goalkeeper Devon Levi rebounded 32 times in making his fourth-season ban, and senior defender and captain Jordan Harris scored a goal and two passes when the Huskies hit the Black Bears 5-0.

Northeastern improved to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in Hockey East, while UMaine is now 0-4-1 and 0-1, respectively.

The teams will finish their series on Saturday at 7pm at the Matthews Arena.

Jack Hughes scored the only goal in the first set. UMaine goalkeeper Matthew Thiessen kept his team in play with 16 counterattacks when Koillis passed UMainen 17-3.

But the goals scored by Harris and Matt Demelis in the second period, less than 3 minutes apart, increased the lead to 3-0 and the Huskies scored insurance goals in the third period from Riley Hughes and Sam Colangelo.

Jack Hughes scored the winner of the first period at 12:35 when he was placed by his brothers Riley and Jeremie Bucheler.

Harris scored 2-0 with 8:10 left in the middle when he turned the odd man’s plunge. Colangelo and Tommy Miller collected assists.

Harris was involved in the Demelis goal when he picked up one of the entry points along with Ty Jackson.

Riley Hughes knocked home the 4 – 0 goal just outside the reach of the goalkeeper.

There was 15:22 left in the episode, and Colangelo finished with Harris and Miller’s entry points.

“We didn’t play well. We managed to overplay in all areas of the game,” U Barine head coach Ben Barr said.

He said they repeatedly turned around the puck, feeding the Northeastern transition and leading to goal scoring opportunities. And they tried to do too much individually.

“It was like last Friday night’s game. It was weird to see. It was pretty ugly,” Barr said, referring to Sacred Heart’s 1-0 loss, with UMaine letting out four semi-finals and two against.

Thiessen rejected 37 times.
