Daniil Medvedev said he was eager to play in the Australian Open in January, but the US Open champion was unable to confirm his participation if only Covid-19 vaccinated players get to Melbourne.
Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews said this week that no unvaccinated player should play in the tournament, although Prime Minister Scott Morrison said earlier that they could compete, but only after two weeks of quarantine.
Medvedev refused to disclose his vaccine status and said he preferred to keep his patient records private, similar to the world’s number one, Novak Djokovic.
“I’ve always said I really like Novak’s response to this. I want to keep my doctor, whether it’s a vaccine, foot injuries, head injuries … I want to keep medicine private for a reason, ”said world number one in preparation for the Paris Masters.
“I feel like tennis is such a cruel sport where you are always one against your opponent and all the information you give him can be against you. If you play in Australia, it is obvious that you have been vaccinated. That’s why I said I’m ready to play against Australia, but I’m not saying, Will you see me there, but we’re going to see you in January.
Djokovic, who returned to the game in Paris for the first time since the US Open final, said he expected Tennis Australia to confirm the rules for quarantines and vaccinations before deciding whether to chase the record for the 21st grand slam title.
“Currently, we have no official announcement or statement,” Djokovic said. “So before it’s released, I’m not going to talk about this anymore.
“When the official fitness requirements to travel to Australia and play in Australia, then obviously I look at what I do with it personally, and also with a larger number of players, because in Australia the situation is clearly different than in most parts of the country.”
Medvedev, who ends the year after the end of the Davis Cup final in December, also urged administrators to shorten the length of the season and reduce the workload for players. “We’re probably the only top sport that plays 11 months a year … so you have two and a half weeks of time [after the Davis Cup] to prepare for the Australian Open, which is clearly not enough, he said.
“So this is a very difficult topic where I could talk for hours, and I don’t really have an actual answer, but yeah, it would be better if the season was a little shorter.”
